Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Geoff Cameron Stoke (Getty Images)

By FRANCO PANIZO

Geoff Cameron may have spent most of this past week in the United States completing paperwork to finalize his move to Stoke City, but that did not stop him from earning a start and making an impressive debut for the Potters.

Three days after arriving to England, Cameron put forth an impressive 90-minute outing in his first Stoke appearance as he helped the club hold Arsenal to a scoreless draw at Britannia Stadium. Cameron was deployed as a central midfielder and he reportedly was one of the best players on the field, showing some smooth passing and great range to disrupt the Gunners' talented attack. The only way the match could have been better for Cameron, who has had limited training with his new teammates in recent weeks, is if Stoke would have found a way to win.

Michael Bradley also made his debut for his new club, AS Roma, on Sunday and he helped save the club from a huge season-opening disappointment by coming through in the clutch. Roma was trailing Catania by one goal when Bradley, who started and went the distance despite picking up an early caution, assisted on Nico Lopez's stunning equalizer in the 90th minute of the 2-2 draw.

The lone goal this weekend came from Josh Gatt, who netted an early winner in Molde FK's 2-0 win over Chad Barrett and Valerenga. Gatt found the back of the net three minutes into the game by using his trademark speed, and that marked the third straight league match in which he has scored. The goal was his sixth of the season.

What do you think of these performances? How impressed are you by Cameron's debut? Think Bradley's clutch assist will help keep him in Roma's starting lineup? How many more goals do you see Gatt scoring this season?

  1. True Ture but riddle me this…

Where was Cameron playing when Houston started winning THIS year?

Where was he playing when Houston was struggling?

Look Im not analyzing $#*t im just pointing out what IS

A wise man once said that every truth passes three stages before it is recognized.
First it is ridiculed, then it is opposed, lastly it is recognized as self-evident

From what I can tell we’ve got two out of the way right here but I would rather we get this truth to stage three before we exit Brazil in the first round (or not qualify)

But hey if you want a CB that has potential yet clearly needs seasoning (seasoning which will not come from his club btw) come in and play for us in critical matches … well you must like losing, because that’s exactly what your asking for

  2. bro i think this is the deepest the american abroads list has ever been and it will continue to grow every new season we’ll be ready for 2014 Brazil!!!

  3. The Houston Dynamo were always a better team when Cameron played CB… We moved him back there at the end of last season and made a run to the championship… Solid analysis buddy…

  4. O/T but watching The Other Guys right now. Clearly Will Ferrell’s best performance since Old School right? Though Step Brothers comes close

  5. I’d rather Dempsey move to Tottenham than move to any other PL club or return to Fulham

Congrats to Cameron on his debut. Hope he continues solid play to hold down his spot.

Way to go Bradley. Roma is a solid club and good performances will see them back in the CL.

And glad to see Friedel is still the number1 at Tottenham. Several rumors of some big club GK’s coming in to take that spot

  6. Check the stats…he had 5…..FIVE…’FIF’ completed passes vs Mexico and that is an example of ‘great’ distribution from the back?

Also he DID shut down Chicarito UNTIL the 65 minute when he proceeded to give Chicarito at least 3 chances that MOST people, including Ives, would agree that should have been finished…by an MLS FWD much less Chicarito

The proof is in the pudding…he is a better CM…thats why he PLAYED at CM today..thats why Houston coach MOVED him to CM the last 3 games he wore a Dynamo kit.

Hey remember that game Stoke was in the house to scout Cameron…he was playing CB and played terrible yet stoke stayed interested and eventually purchased him. Why was that? …I’ll tell you why….THEY PROJECTED HIM AS A CM ALL ALONG.
Its only us USMNT fans..IVES included that are so accustomed to mediocrity on the backline that someone can put in 3/4 of a good performance then shut off at the end of the game and be celebrated as the second comming of Eddie Pope

Anyway enough of the negativity..I’m glad to see he had a good start, although he was playing his natural/BEST position he hasn’t played there much this year and hasn’t had too practice much with the team to boot. Truly impressive for him to earn MOTM in that scenario. ..hell MOTM in the EPL is great in any scenario

  7. Nowhere in your rambling, incoherent nonsense of a post was anything close to what I would consider a decent and insightful comment. I would personally argue that you are entirely wrong on every point you ‘attempted’ to make.

  8. Take chandler off this board… It’s not necessary to keep tabs on him if he’s not committed… Good job mb… Clint please find a way to play bro

  9. Most people, including Ives, agree that he is better projected at CB and played admirably there against Mexico. He shut down Chicharito 1v1 and had several clutch saves.

He’s good in the air and is great at distributing from the back, which is just what we need in our CB pool.

Your last point just didn’t make any sense at all (try using commas) , so I’m not going to rebut that.

  10. I can believe it. Sounds like Jol has decided to offload Deuce wherever he can and end the drama.

Really, if Dempsey has a side to the story, he really needs to get it out, because he’s looking bad in the press.

  11. 87% from a midfielder isn’t a bad game at all. 7.39 isn’t anything to be ashamed of either.

I’d say Roma’s defense was shambolic on both goals, though I’m trying to figure out how the first wasn’t ruled offside, as the goal scorer certainly gained an advantage from being offside when the shot was struck, and thus should’ve been flagged for it as long as the play was active.

  12. He’s not that good of a CB…he is however a sweet CM/CDM.
    -Wake up folks

Chicarito could have had 3 easy goals because of Camerons marking vs Mexico…Cameron stunk up the pitch while playing CB for Houston this year yet every time he plays at CM he LIGHTS up the pitch.
    -HELLO

If he can perform well at CM in the EPL then he can compete for PT for the USMNT at that position
    -DUH

The two CB’s USMNT should be excited about will be playing in 15minutes ..namely George John and Omar Gonzalez
    -WINNING

  13. Thanks Franco, love this feature. Love how fast it goes up, love the rundowns, love the vids, love that most of the vids actually play on my iPad.

Love performances by Gatt, Cameron, MB. I also think Corona had a hockey assist for Tijuana. At least it seemed that way to me. He played well.

Hate that Gyau, Ream and Williams didn’t get on the pitch.

  14. Yeah, you’re making it out like he was the weak link on the team, and he wasn’t, not even close to it. He didn’t have “streches” where he was poor; he had a few poor plays in the course of the entire game. What kind of argument is Totti is a legend? You obviously aren’t disputing he didn’t have a great game, so again, in context, Bradley was not nearly as dire as you are making him out to be.

    Reply
  15. Yea well Totti has over 200 Serie A goals and is a legend with the team. Bradley is expendable in a competitive Roma midfield. Bradley had stretches where he was decent but he also had stretches where he was poor. He got his pocket picked in a really bad spot that could have been costly. He tried to lay off a pass to Osvaldo in the box when he should have just blasted it into the net.

I am confident Bradley can keep his starting spot – but he needs to up his play. Roma plays Inter next week and a poor performance in that game could see him dropped.

  16. He lost the ball two, maybe three times during the games, otherwise his passing and positioning was quite good. Other players were losing the ball everytime they had it, even Totti gave it away a couple times. If Bradley would lose a starting spot because of his performance, Roma would run out of players.

  17. Bradley was nervous, made some errors and almost costly mistakes. But his last pass to Nico Lopez redeemed him. He has to be better in the future if he wants to hold onto a starting spot.

  18. I want to know the same thing, occasionally I watch a Santos match to see how he’s doing.. and it seems like every time I do he gets left on the bench. Including those two championship games last season.

  19. Looks like you’ll have to add Scotland 3rd division to the list ….didn’t Boca play today?

    (SBI-We won’t, and he did.)

  20. Good to see Cameron playing, but one has to think this is doing no favors for the USMNT CB situation with him playing at CM. But I think he has the talent and soccer intelligence to play CM for club and CB for the USMNT if that happens.

Good first showing for Bradley. He had some hiccups, but it was only the first league game.

Gatt needs to saty healthy from here on out. I think he ends the season with 8 goals and 8 assists.

  21. Bradley was ok throughout. He gave the ball away a few times too many I thought. But the long ball to Lopez for the stoppage time equalizer was a thing of beauty. He really showed his class on that one, and it was the most important play of the game. Not sure what was going on with Roma’s defense, a couple of pretty serious lapses in concentration. Draw was probably a fair result but I was disappointed with Roma overall, thought they would win this one.

  22. I feel like Tim Chandler’s info should have been in parentheses or have an asterisk next it.
(Timmy Chandler started and played 90 minutes in FC Nurnberg’s 1-0 win vs. Hamburg SV on Saturday.)

  23. Bradley did pretty well. I think DeRossi, Osvaldo, and Totti were better, but he was better than the rest of Roma, especially their defense.

  24. Cameron did well for the lack of time he had with his squad. Michael bradley didnt do so well but he made up for it with his late assist. Overall it was a good showing. USMNT!!
