Ream called in by Klinsmann for USA-Jamaica World Cup qualifiers

Tim Ream's uneven start to his first full season and England has not prevented him from making his return to the U.S. men's national team.

According to his club, Bolton, Ream has been called in by Jurgen Klinsmann for the United States' World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica on Sept. 7 and 11. Ream has not made it off the bench in Bolton's last two league matches after starting the season opener against Burnley. He did go the distance in Bolton's most recent match, a 2-1 loss to Crawley town in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

Ream has not played for the national team since coming on as a substitute in the United States' 1-0 loss to Ecuador at Red Bull Arena on Oct. 11, 2011. His last start for the national team came under Bob Bradley, during the 2-1 loss to Panama in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The call-up will be his first since making his transfer from the New York Red Bulls to Bolton last winter.

  1. If I was picking (and considering injuries to Bradley and Donovan), I’d let the vets play in Kingston, Jamaica and sub in 3 young guys and then let the young guys cut their teeth in Columbus.

    Kingston:
    Howard
    Dolo, Bocanegra, ?, Johnson
    Demps, Jones, Edu, Torres
    Jozy Herc

    Columbus:
    Howard
    Lichaj, Omar, Ream, Johnson
    Demps, Jones, Torres, Shea
    Jozy (Wondo or Gordon)

If he goes 4-3-3 then keep Jozy along up top and keep Edu and Shea for both.

(Obviously wish we had Donovan and Bradley)

  2. @Rlw2020 — Agreed, well said.

Not to mention that we have Dolo getting old and a right back playing left back.

JK needs to start bringing in some young blood at CB, RB and LB. I still can’t figure out why Lichaj doesn’t get more of a look. The few times I saw him last year he was impressive.

    LB back?? Got me??

  3. Ream looked TERRIBLE in the one game he started for Bolton this season, and was immediately benched, as he should have been.
This dude is such a wimp for a CB. Dude, go lift some weights. I don’t care how well he passes, that is secondary to DEFENDING and I’m sick of seeing him get bullied around!

  4. wow, what a callup. we’ll see but this one goes against the preconceptions on callups many believe.

doesn’t appear to be a good matchup for Ream vs. Jamaica either. We’ll see what happens and I hope Tim’s improved since last we saw him if he makes the field

  5. a big difference is that Edu has been a central contributor for the Nats for years…not Ream.

anyway, this sure throws a monkey wrench into the belief that Klinnsman uses some playing time formula requirements for callups

and good for Coach! he’s supposed to callup who he wants for whatever reasons he wants…not because of some static protocol

this is what coaches do…see the Shea callup for Azteca

  6. I wonder if JK is planning to examine Ream at D-Mid.

Bolton played him there a few times, and he apparently looked his best there with less pure defensive liability and more opportunities to distribute.

With Bradley out and Torres failing to contribute, maybe he gets a shot. After all, we’re dealing with the coach that has played Danny Williams on the wings over 3 times.

  7. Other FB options that I could see JK going with are Parkhurst, Lichaj, or MAYBE a Beitashour, Pearce, or Morrow. I’d put my money on Parkhurst and Lichaj along with Johnson and Dolo. Johnson’s going to have to put the brakes on Dane Richards.

What I’m really worried about is Mattocks. That guy is almost guaranteed to turn a few routine plays, mishit crosses, etc, into something really dangerous. Mattocks’s aerial threat and general freakishness are all the more reason we have to smother Dane Richards all game.

  8. I don’t see how he’s anointing him as a savior. He’s just stating that Hines is a better defender than Ream and that he’s available to the USMNT if the US is interested. Not sure why they wouldn’t be as it can’t hurt to have as many players available as possible
