Fan favorite Alvaro Fernandez may be gone, but Seattle Sounders supporters have another new player to cheer for in addition to recently-acquired Christian Tiffert.
The Sounders announced Monday that they added Honduran international midfielder Mario Martinez on loan from Real Espana. Martinez, who is currently with the Honduras team competing in the Olympics , was acquired after Real Salt Lake traded the No. 1 discovery priority on the the 23-year-old to Seattle in exchange for a conditional draft pick.
The left-footed Martinez has been with Real Espana since beginning his professional career in 2006. There, he has scored four times in 58 league appearances. Martinez has also spent time on loan with Norwegian club Valerenga and Belgian outfit RSC Anderlecht previously in his career.
Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
What do you think of the Sounders adding Martinez on loan? Expecting him to succeed in MLS?

I doubt it. Evans is pretty much a 2nd half sub once Tiffert is starting. The only spot i can see Evans playing with Tiffert on the field is either RW or RB.
wth is discovery priority. what is with all these orders. its f’ing stupid. same with the draft. same with allocation order with usmnt players. its all stupid, give the players some freedom and maybe we’ll sign better players
except that NYRB were taking USOC more seriously this year and still lost! hah!
So i guess SKC and philly dont exist. And San Jose wasnt trying their hardest to beat the sounders in the open cup this year either. your reply makes you sound like a kid.
Idiot, he’s commenting on how the Red Bulls could fill a lineup with the just the amount of Scandinavian players and players from Scandinivian leagues they have. Comments like yours are why people think us sounder fans are all buttcheeks.
Wow. “Get rid of turf” is hate? Find some class you humorless wank. Oh and… grow some grass.
STFU. Sounders play on plastic. And no one cares about the US Open Cup except Seattle.
Bravo, way to miss the joke entirely
Sigi will still find a way to play teacher’s pet Evans
Outmatched? Honduras has been impressive
Sounds like RSL weren’t sufficiently impressed by him. My guess is the conditional pick has to do with minutes played and stats he puts up for sounders. So if he’s a stud RSL will get a high pick and if he doesn’t see the field well RSL gets some low supplemental draft pick etc.
Hard to say between college and foreign signings which group produces better mls players. I’d guess they’re equally successful. Foreign signings are sexier and always cost more and that sounds like what RSL is concerned about. Owners need to open up the checkbook for better players.
“was acquired after Real Salt Lake traded the No. 1 discovery priority … in exchange for a conditional draft pick”
— huh?
Why would RSL give up their claim to him so cheaply?
I like these young Honduran signings. They have shown their quality, and I think the #3 spot for the CONCACAF is currently in their hands.
If they give Martinez can succeed…but he will only have a couple of months of availability this MLS season. Hopefully his loan goes into next season. Curious to see how Seattle uses him.
I watched the Spain game and he looked solid had what would have been an assist if Espinoza hadn’t hit the post on his free header.
Open Cup? Bwahaahaaha Bwahahaaha
Sounders could take a year off and you clowns would still hate on Seattle..
As a Sounders fan, troll hard Chad, troll hard.
you’re a moron. he was making a ‘nyrb love em some scandanvians’ joke. but glad to see how secure you are…
sea has cheap owners. i wouldnt be bragging out sounders
Wait until NY RB pick up Kaka next year and you wont be on your high horse. Get rid of that horrible turf!
D-bag response
Has he been seeing the field with Honduras at the Olympics? Any moments of brilliance or idiocy?
Why would you look at the RedBulls? They’re a crap club that has never ever won a single trophy. No one in America cares about them. Sounders on the other hand have the biggest following in all of MLS and has won silverware every year theyve been in MLS. Sounders>>>>>>RedBulls.
I saw he played in Norway, and immediately went looking elsewhere to see if he actually joined the Red Bulls on loan and not the Sounders.
Really can’t say I know to much about the guy, but Anderlecht is not a bad club to have played for. Wonder what the potential is for making it permanent if he plays well, loans usually have an option to buy.
He should be able to fill Flaco’s spot on the left. I hope this has an option at the end of the loan. It should seeing as that’s generally how MLS rolls. He’s been impressive in the Olympics, playing on an outmatched squad.
