It may have taken a little longer than he would have liked, but Maurice Edu finally made his Stoke City debut.

Edu made his first appearance for Stoke in the club's scoreless draw with Liverpool on Sunday. Edu came off the bench and played the final nine minutes of the match, helping Stoke stymie the Reds' attack to earn a big point at Anfield in his first game at the club level since last May.

Three players found the back of the net this weekend, but no one's goal was bigger than Terrence Boyd's latest finish. Boyd netted his seventh goal of the season across all competitions and fifth in league play when he scored a late equalizer in Rapid Vienna's 1-1 draw with FC Magna Wr. Neustadt.

Michael Bradley and Herculez Gomez were the others to find the back of the net. Gomez opened the scoring in Santos Laguna's 1-1 draw with Queretaro after making a well-timed run to get in behind the defense, while Bradley scored his first goal for AS Roma in a 2-0 triumph over Atalanta in his first game back from injury.

It was not all good news, however. Jozy Altidore had his first major hiccup of the season, getting sent off with a second yellow card for dissent in the 52nd minute of AZ Alkmaar's 3-0 defeat to Twente Enschede, and Brad Friedel's consecutive start streak in the Premiership ended at 310 games after he was benched in favor of Hugo Lloris in Tottenham's 2-0 win against Aston Villa.

What do you think of these performances? Do you see Edu breaking into Stoke City's line-up soon? Impressed with Boyd's latest finish? More disappointed with Altidore's sending off or Friedel's streak coming to an end?

  1. “his ball control, vision and passing ability is still better than 90% of the players Klinsmann will call up today”…
    I strongly disagree…better than who?
    Dempsey?..lol
    Donovan?…hell no
    Zusi?…close but not really
Danny williams?…not in a million years
Edu? one plays for stoke and the other can’t go full 90 for Pachuca( they just dropped to 13th in there league)
    Shea maybe? strong argument
    Fabian johnson…think about it
    Dolo?…..yeah right
Cameron?….Goes full 90 in midfield for stoke, no contest
Indecisive Chandler?…better than Torres even in his absence…lol

so where is the 90% coming from? Freddy Adu will be more productive and have a greater impact on the USMNT than Torres

  2. So Bedoya and Beasley are injured. Jones and LD are injured. Jozy might get snubbed. Shea is out. What the hell is this callup going to look like????

  3. Torres played in Pachuca’s game on Wednesday against Puebla and very rarely plays two games in such a short amount of time. Unfortunately his stamina is not the greatest but his ball control, vision and passing ability is still better than 90% of the players Klinsmann will call up today.

  4. News is coming out that Altidore has been snubbed from the USMNT roster.

What on gods green earth is Klinsmann doing the national team?

WHy in the world would you ommitt at striker who is leading a top ten league in goals?

If this is true than I have lost faith in Klinsmann. Especially if Torres is called-up.

I have heard of something about a twitter rumor regarding Klinsmann and Altidore. But if KLinsmann’s ego of not bringing in Altidore is the reason for the snub then he is acting childish.

  5. •Joe Gyau did not dress in St Pauli’s 2-2 draw vs. FC Union Berlin on Friday.

How about that, I’m looking pretty good about saying he wouldn’t play, not that I’m happy about being proved correct.

  6. But, bizzy, Castillo has has some solid performances in a US shirt under Klinsmann. Actually, he was excellent against Mexico in August in Mexico City. I think he is going to grow into a key player next year during the Hex and will be getting minutes in WC 2014 in Brazil (assuming we make it). He is without a doubt when of the most technically gifted players on the team, approaching the level of Fabian Johnson and Jose Torres. Not sure why he gets so much grief and hate on the SBI message boards. Moral of the Story: Don’t believe everything you read.

  7. Biff whats crazy is Edgar Castillo started and completed the full game and was a menace on the left wing.
Dude, in the 56th minute, Cas skillfully passed three players in his own half, drawing chants of “olé” from the crowd.
Over lapping in attack for a goal that was called offside……Against Toluca!!! “Castillo What”!!!! Will the real Castillo please stand up…lol

  8. Danny William‘s yellow card yesterday gives him five for the season and puts him in first place in the Bundesliga for yellow cards, plus he has to sit out the next game. Quite frankly, I am happy to see him playing with more bite like Jermaine Jones, who only has two yellow cards so far.

Here is a link to yellow cards in the Bundesliga. And if you want, you can klick (upper right corner) the table to go back to the 2011-12 season (any guesses who is at the top of the list 🙂

  9. Tijuana beat Toluca 1-0 last night to move into first place in Mexico. Makes me happy as I am big fan of Edgar Castillo and also see potential in Joe Corona. I think Castillo will see some USMNT playing time against Antigua and Guatemala either at left back or left wing. I would rather see Johnson and his defense at left back with his runs up the side. But Castillo’s defense must be pretty good if Tijuana kept a clean sheet against the previous first place team in Mexico.

  10. this is true, Clint Dempsey did get an assist for Lennon’s goal and had decent game and was applauded warmly by the fans when he was subbed off. I do wish Tottenham would not focus almost 100% offensively on wing play, but instead balance wing play with some straight down the middle action, which I think would make better use of Dempsey.

  11. 3rd top scorer in the league. 5goals in 9 matches. Not bad for 2nd teamer at Borussia Dortmund. He needs the start in their EL matches

  12. That wasn’t long ago, either. The progress since 2002 has been amazing. We may not be moving as fast as we we would like but we are moving in the right direction.

  13. Over Van der Saar? Over Jens Lehman? David Seaman? Some of us have been watching the Premiership since inception. There have been great goal keepers in the league. Be careful before you start naming Brad the third best in the league. Brad’s a consistent goalkeeper and great to have him play this long.

  14. Because it’s a damn fine read at the end of a big soccer weekend. NFL primetime didn’t use to run after all the games ended, just after most of them did. Baseball tonight doesn’t run after ALL the games end, either.

  15. Good point, but not necessarily true. Bankruptcy doesn’t mean you’re poor. It can be just a way to deal with a bad bit of business. Donald Trump has gone through bankruptcy four times. It doesn’t mean he’s poor.

  16. You have inside information that Brad will continue to start or just an assumption? Villas-Boas already said today post-match that playing Iloris was a no brainer.

  17. Just take a step back and smell the roses for a bit. For the first time ever, we’ve got two Yanks (field players) starting and scoring goals for two of the biggest, and most historic clubs in the world in Spurs and Roma. How amazing is this? Remember when it was a huge deal to have one or two guys playing for mid-table EPL clubs?? We have taken a step up, my friends. It’s not the finish line, but it’s certainly a step up.

  18. Maurice might be relegated to League Cup and FA Cup matches at Stoke City since Steven Nzonzi and Charle Adam are their starting central midfielders.

  19. 4. None of the above.

Spurs played Lloris against he most anemic offense in the EPL. Hardly a ringing endorsement. Friedel will continue to be the #1 this year. After teh season, he will have time to reflect on the choices you discuss.

  20. I still do not see the point of doning this article until monday. There are several players that are playing “Sunday Evening” or play monday. What is the point of updating until those players you know actually play.

  21. Jose Torres can’t even have consistent play time with Pachuca, a 12th place team in Mexico but he is considered/selected for the USMNT?? I will never understand the logic…

  22. Agreed.

That being sad. AZ are overly reliant on him. The next game who will score for them? Jozy is clearly their best player now

  23. arguably the 3rd best keeper in PL history after the likes of Schmeichel and Cech. He’s underrated outside the PL though. If he would have been no1 at the 2006 WC, who knows.

    Reply
  24. Agreed. He’s their no 1 for the next 5 years if not 10. It seems as if they were trying to reassure him amongst the pressure from the higher ups. It seemed kinda funny considering Friedel was in great form and it’s only been 4 PL games that he has missed. Not like that would have hurt him with match fitness.

Friedel will start against Chelsea I’m sure in 2weeks

  25. Aston Villa, right? Is it just me being an American homer or does Friedel get no love in England? Seems that if he were British he’d be Sir Brad Friedel by now

  26. Jozy’s second yellow was questionable, but still dumb move.

Those who think it is a reason not to call him up are bonkers. Still might be the leading scorer in Europe, by all accounts a very good dude. Was defending a teammate, not smart decision, but not earth-shatteringly terrible.

  27. Chandler went from being not on the radar for Germany to being not even close to the radar in the past few weeks. Focusing on his club form is really working. 😀

    Reply
  28. really? He was playing fine. Announcers mentioned that Lloris was promised a league game b4 the international break… or something like that. I think there’s pressure to play him from the French coaching staff, as he’s France’s #1
