A good chunk of American soccer fans will be watching the conference finals in the MLS playoffs this weekend, but those matches are not the only ones worth viewing.
This weekend provides another lengthy list of intriguing games, including the Rome derby between Lazio and Roma on Sunday. Michael Bradley should start in the match, and he will likely have to make an impact for Roma to be victorious.
Barcelona will also be in action on Sunday, as they travel to take on Mallorca. Barcelona will be champing at the bit to make up for their UEFA Champions League loss to Celtic earlier in the week, so expect them to come out flying in what should be an entertaining game to watch.
Then, there’s the first legs of the MLS conference finals. The Houston Dynamo will host D.C. United at BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday afternoon and that will be followed up by the Los Angeles Galaxy’s home game at the Home Depot Center against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday night.

I don’t know how anyone can watch these games and not think the playoffs are awesome. Every game has been so compelling. So much drama. Imagine if it was all over the day San Jose clinched the shield. We wouldn’t have any of this. Our system makes for fantastic entertainment and boosts the economy by forcing people like me to make late night runs to Walgreens for large bottles of Tums.
The last minute goals have been incredibly great and gut wrenching bad depending who you are rooting for.
Just ignore the guys trying to get rid of the playoffs. They ignore the facts and try to pretend noone cares or that they have not been very fun.
The playoffs will be expanded not contracted…too much money being made not to do so.
I’ve become a much bigger fan of the playoffs as they’ve fine tuned the format. Giving homefield advantage and eliminating neutral sites was key. I think it’s interesting having the Shield awarded to the most consistent team over the year… as well, great having a playoff tourney to watch the intensity ramp up as it goes along. I can appreciate the merits of an intense sprint race as well as a war of attrition marathon. Why? In the end- I simply enjoy watching soccer…. I love the game, not how it is packaged.
Sunday it is. Start your morning w Deuce, keep it on FSC for Liverpool v Chelsea (where ya at Mig?) and the chaser with DCU v Houston. Go Red Dragons! VAMOS United!
no one is watching these MLS playoffs. It’s time for the league to reconsider how they decide the league champ.
I think you are wrong. I know I am certainly watching the MLS playoffs. And they have been rather compelling this season!
Lol baseball playoff ratings were down to but I doubt they change their system. Look its football season and as much as people arent going to like this the Epl would get crushed in the same position. Because its still soccer its still really far down the pole when compared to even Nascar. Look just enjoy it and stop worring about ratings years of people loving other sports isn’t going to change over night. Patience grasshopper lol it will get better.
Wrong, and I’ll take the run to make the playoffs over relegation anyday. These post season games have been great so far. The system could still be tweaked a little but the home and away series have proved who was worthy of the semis….the supporters shield was won fair and square, so they get all the perks the winner of the cup earns.
i would prefer a champ determined another way but to say nobody is watching them is simply not true. i watched part of every game the last two days and most american soccer fans have watched them at some point
I did not take much time to watch all the MLS games available on television this season (which isn’t much considering how basic my cable subscription is). However, I have gone out of my way to be able to watch the playoff games now that they have started. If your comment is in relation to the number of fans showing up for games (some of the stadiums have looked sparse) then you may have an argument.
Gentlemen,
you are taking me literally when I say no one. Clearly some people are watching. However, the American soccer fan in mass is not.
I’m a bartender at a pub and we have a lot of American soccer fans as clientele. They come in to watch the champions league and some Europe matches. They come in to watch the USMNT. But they won’t watch MLS. I try to always have MLS on one of the TV’s. No one is interested. Even for these playoff games.
Their is a lot of empty seats for these games and if the TV ratings continue to be very poor i think MLS needs to change. More and more American fans are being cultured into the sport through the EPL where the regular season crowns a champion. MLS needs to do this too.
I think once the league goes to 20 teams a single table with a league champion will get people interested in following the league.
They can have an MLS Cup for a post-season tournament as well. I’m not saying get rid of it. I’m saying make the regular season something fun to follow.
Where do you live? I don’t have a hard time accepting what you say if you are nowhere near an MLS team (at least a good one).
i’m in Los Angeles. Fifteen minutes from where the LA Galaxy play.
I think he meant to say “you guys are taking me seriously…”
Seattle is just deciding how many will be at next weeks game a lot or a hellova lot.
people will show up for seattle regardless.
i’m talking about national interest in the league and TV ratings.
rumors are out that Everton might be bringing in a new GK to compete with Howard as no.1?
How is one of the cheapest clubs in the Prem going to do better than Howard. They are already punching above their weight with Tim Howard as a starter. Crazytalk. Tim is one of the top 5 keepers in the prem, don’t think they can do much better
