Cherundolo to miss next Hannover game due to knee pains

If Hannover 96 are to win their first game of 2013 when the Bundesliga returns from its winter break this weekend, they will have to do so without Steve Cherundolo.

The Hannover captain and U.S. Men’s National Team defender will not be available for the club’s road game against Schalke 04 on Friday, as he is dealing with knee pains. Cherundolo did not train with Hannover on Wednesday, but the knock is reportedly not too serious.

The 33-year-old Cherundolo has started 15 of Hannover’s 17 Bundesliga games this season, his 14th with the club. Hannover currently sit in 11th place in the Bundesliga standings.

If healthy, Cherundolo is expected to partake in the United States’ first World Cup qualifier of the final round of CONCACAF qualifying against Honduras on Feb. 6.

How do see you Hannover faring without Cherundolo this weekend? Still amazed by how long he’s been at Hannover? Worried by the knee pains, especially with the Honduras qualifier around the corner?

  1. Exactly why I predict Chandler will be starting at RB for the USMNT sooner rather than later.

Much respect and love to Dolo though.

    • Pretty much every USMNT fan says Dolo is under-appreciated, which if you think about it, probably makes him properly appreciated.

      • haha well said. The most impressive thing about Cherundolo has been his consistency. The guy almost never has a bad game. He may not stand out every night but he is as consistent a player as we have ever had in a US shirt.

  2. Stevie. 14 years at Hanover. Nearly 11years in the Bundesliga. He’s close to record Bundesliga matches for the club. Arguably the best US defender to ever play in Europe. Only Gooch/Boca come close. Maybe Cameron/Gonzalez can take the title someday

    • Hell yeah. Give the nod to Steve over Gooch/Boca due to 1) consistent playing time and not being injured like Gooch and 2) better competition than Boca.
      Cheers Dolo!!!!!!

  3. After Boca’s hammy and then this I will be interested how many of the O-30s make it through the qualis to Brazil. Even if they make the 23 roster I think you have a Lewis/Reyna 06 situation with some of the backs.

Dolo can be addressed by leaving Fabian L and moving Chandler back R and then looking at depth in Gold Cup. I’d be more worried about replacing Boca…

      • We took the same team as we did in 2002 and got killed because half the players went from “prime” to “too old”.

      • Reyna made a stupid decision against Ghana that probably cost the US advancing out of our group (along with that terrible call on Gooch). His brain was not too old. Also, he was fantastic against Italy in 2006 so I just dont agree that the US performance in that world cup had to do with players being too old.

      • Both Eddie Pope and “Left back” Eddie Lewis did get burned against the czechs. They did not get faster or stronger as the tournament progressed.
