In a week when there weren’t exactly a ton of goals scored in MLS, there stood a very good chance that a goalkeeper would have a good chance to be the MLS Player of the Week. Given the performance Bill Hamid turned in, he would have been a serious contender no matter how many goals were scored around the league.
The young D.C. United turned in one of the games of the season on Saturday, making eight saves, including a last-minute goal-line stop, to help preserve a scoreless draw vs. the New York Red Bulls. His efforts made him the easy pick for SBI MLS Player of the Week honors.
Hamid beat out a field that included Patrice Bernier, Clint Irwin and Jack McInerney, among others.
D.C. United is off to a slow start, but that has been due more to the team’s struggling offense than Hamid and the defense, which has allowed just one goal through three games this season. Hamid has been particularly sharp, making key saves in all three matches.
What did you think of Hamid’s performance against the Red Bulls? Which MLS player impressed you the most in Week Three?
Share your thoughts below.
He is certainly wining me over these past few months.
Is anyone generally annoyed by Hamid’s screaming / antics in games? I have not seen it discussed but do find him acting like a spoiled brat very often, either towards the opposition or the referees.
Ever seen Tim Howard play?
Do you watch a lot of games? A lot of great keepers (not all) bark out orders to their D-Line, and sometimes get on them. Ever watch Schmeichel, Buffon, or Oliver Kahn? Frankly…I can a 2 dozen other keepers
The defense will be fine but DC’s offense needs to get its act together if they want to contend. Need to try giving that Gladiator kid some time, or even try starting Ruiz
Better forwards would help, but United’s problems start with the midfield
when is he moving to Europe?
“the defense, which has allowed just one goal through three games this season. ”
What was the score of the match against Houston?
Well….the defense only allowed one goal to Houston, and scored the other for Houston.
So, there,
Also, when United is playing these days, a 0-0 or 1-0 result is a near certainty. So, it was an honest mistake.
As great as Hamid was this week, an in form Henry scores 3 goals and nets an assist or two on Saturday. That is the most wasteful effort I’ve ever seen from the Frenchman.
Moderation for that? What’s going on with the moderation system?
Glad Bill is getting deserved recognition. He has progressed every year and will be one of MLS’s top players by the time he leaves the league (which could be sooner rather than later).
It’s a shame people with see the score of 0-0 and automatically assume DCU – NYRB was a boring, unattractive affair. It was anything but that and one of the better scoreless draws I have seen in a long while. Hamid was playing out of his mind. He was an absolute stone wall. The camera panned his face a few times and the look in his eyes scared the hell out of me. It was a big weekend for borh Brad Guzan and Hamid. Just what we need with Howard going down with injury. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hamid backing up Guzan for CR and MX.
