U.S. Under-20s vs. Cuba: Match Day Commentary

The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team has already secured a place in the Under-20 World Cup, but there is still hardware to play for down in Mexico as they face Cuba in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship semifinals (6pm, Fox Soccer Channel).

The Americans will be without Luis Gil, who returned to Real Salt Lake for the start of the MLS season, while quarterfinal star Jose Villarreal is on the bench today nursing an ankle injury.

SBI will be providing live commentary on today’s match so please feel free to follow the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. Over all our team got better with every game.. Our defense is playing well, backed up by a very good keeper Cody Cropper,But I feel we will need to be on our highest and best form to secure a win with Mexico. If they can tighten up their game,Our forward players are capable of scoring goals.I feel this is our best under 20s team ever to represent our country. They will make American history if they win this one game .Its a lot on their shoulders ,but I know they will give it their best shot .

    • Count me as pretty excited if he did. The team needs it to bring their level and cohesion up before the final. I am glad to see a good team defense as much as offense. We don’t need to win by 5 goals, this is soccer.

    • It was an opportunity to work on the possession game under real-game conditions.

This is a team with a lot to work on and this was a good opportunity for them to work on stuff they will need in the future.

    • I’ve heard plenty of British announcers say that. A 2-0 lead is good but you have to remember how close you are to having a game on your hands if you give em one. What would you call it?

  2. Just call one of our legitimate penalties this tournament… just one please. One. I understand that this game is essentially meaningless, but if the players are going to go hard then the officials should call it straight.

    • Americans should think of it as a useful learning experience for the Under 20’s.

It’s good to learn you can win even when the ref is giving you the business, as long as you keep your head.

It is useful for prospective US internationals to understand the refs are not your friend and discipline is a really useful thing in such cases. And that the sort of whining, pissing and moaning that you are free to engage in is of no use to them and may be harmful.

  3. For me Trapp is not doing enough to get on the ball. Hence why Torre keeps looking long.

Trapp has not had a good tournament.

Need better possession the second half, and Trapp needs to be better.
