Time and time again, one player stood on his head to keep the Vancouver Whitecaps in the match. That man was Brad Knighton.

The Whitecaps goalkeeper had his best game of the season, recording seven saves and earning a clean sheet as the Whitecaps took down their Cascadia rivals, the Seattle Sounders, 2-0, in front of a sell-out crowd on Saturday night at BC Place. The win was the Canadian club’s first over either the Portland Timbers or Sounders since joining Major League Soccer in 2011.

Whitecaps captain Kenny Miller gave his side a perfect start in the 4th minute, crossing up Sounders defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado before finishing into the side netting past Michael Gspurning.

Knighton then went to work, denying Eddie Johnson and Obafemi Martins a number of times, keeping the Whitecaps in the game. In the 26th minute, Knighton dove to his left to deny Sounders midfielder Shalrie Joseph, and then the rebound shot from Martins.

In the 79th minute, Whitecaps forward Darren Mattocks, having entered the match three minutes earlier, latched onto a flicked ball from Gershon Koffie, finishing with his left foot over Gspurning for the second goal of the game, and the first for Mattocks since May in a match against the LA Galaxy.
