Having already added Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco, Toronto FC took the chance Thursday to add another player that has played the game on Europe’s highest level.

Toronto FC announced Thursday that the club has signed midfielder Benoit Cheyrou, formerly of France’s Olympique de Marseille. The 33-year-old, who made 304 appearances during his career in France, was a member of Marseille’s 2009-10 league-winning side while also featuring in a total of 37 Champions League contests.

“Benoit’s vision and his ability to distribute the ball are two very distinct qualities that have made him such a successful player throughout his career, both domestically in France and in European competition,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “He has a wealth of experience and success and is another important piece that complements the ones we currently have in place. We are very excited to bring him to Toronto FC.”

“I’m very excited to sign for Toronto FC,” Cheyrou added. “I cannot wait to wear the jersey and join my new teammates.”

DYNAMO HIRE USWNT GOALKEEPING COACH ROGERS

After losing the club’s initial hire due to personal reasons, the Houston Dynamo have brought in a new goalkeeping coach.

The Dynamo announced Wednesday that the club has hired Paul Rogers, who has been the goalkeeping coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team for the past six seasons. Rogers will now join the staff of newly appointed coach Owen Coyle.

“I want to thank Owen and the Houston Dynamo for this fantastic opportunity,” Rogers said. “These are exciting times for Major League Soccer and I’m looking forward to getting on the training pitch with Tyler (Deric), Joe (Willis), Michael (Lisch) and the rest of the group. I’m thrilled to be working with such a great coaching staff and front office to bring continued success to the club.

“I would also like to thank U.S. Soccer for the opportunity to work with a world class program. I am grateful to Sunil Gulati, Dan Flynn and Jill Ellis for the opportunity to work with one of the world’s elite national teams.”

Rogers departs a USWNT in turmoil, as the team is currently without starting goalkeeper Hope Solo due to suspension.

The hiring comes shortly following the departure of Phil Hughes, who was hired earlier this offseason but had to depart the team due to personal reasons.

  1. “Rogers departs a USWNT in turmoil”
Whoah, not good news for the USWNT!! You have keepers that are untested on the national stage without a keeper coach & potentially without Solo – not a good way to go into the final months before a WC!!!!
