In an effort to save its season, Hannover 96 has appointed a new coaching set-up that includes one of the club’s and the U.S. Men’s National Team’s most storied players.

Steve Cherundolo has been named assistant manager to Michael Frontzeck’s new system at Hannover, according to local media reports. The club sits two points away from the relegation zone after a devastating 4-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, resulting in Tayfun Korkut’s firing on Monday.

Since retiring at the end of the 2013-14 season, Cherundolo has been part of the Hannover coaching team. He was put in charge of the club’s under-15 squad this season.

Cherundolo played for Hannover for his entire career between 1999 and 2014. In addition to 370 appearances for the German club, he appeared 87 times for the USMNT.

Hannover plays four of their next five games against top-half opponents, with the fifth coming against fellow strugglers Freiburg.

What do you think about Cherundolo’s appointment? Can Frontzeck, Cherundolo and the new set-up save Hannover from relegation?

  1. Based on their remaining schedule it would be a minor miracle for them to avoid the drop. If they do, I’m betting he’s next in line for Head Coach. I hope they do. USMNT is a bit farther away but that would be great. I’m looking forward to the day a former U.S. It’l takes over. But who will be first? Kreis? Verses? Churundolo? Marsh? Olsen? Heaps? Mastroeni? There a lot of really god young US coaches right – exciting to follow.

  2. One of my top-10 favorite players ever to wear the USA jersey. I hadn’t even considered that one day we might see him take over the USMNT until I read the comments on here. For now, good luck in your new assistant coaching job, Steve!

  3. Really excited about this. Cherundolo will most likely be the first American to coach in a top European league. Even if he doesn’t make it there he can come back to the MLS and bring back what he learned. I would not be surprised to see him coach the USNT some day.

  4. 15 years from now I’d love to see a seasoned, storied, and accomplished Coach Cherundolo take over the USMNT program.
