Tuesday Kickoff: Chicharito set to start for Madrid in UCL decider, Man Utd lead race for Depay, and more

Real Madrid CF v Cornella - Copa Del Rey: Round of 32

Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has found steady minutes a tough proposition at Real Madrid, but he looks set to play in the most important match of the season for the reigning champions of Europe.

Spanish publication AS is reporting that Hernandez will start in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Atletico Madrid, a move precipitated by a rash of injuries, including the absence of Karim Benzema to a knee injury, as well as Gareth Bale’s own calf injury.

Real Madrid will host Atletico at the Bernabeu, looking to beat Diego Simeone’s side for the first time this season. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the Vicente Calderon, Atletico can advance with a win or any draw that isn’t 0-0. Another goal-less draw would lead to extra time, and then penalty kicks of no goals are produced.

Here are some more news and notes to get your Tuesday going:

MANCHESTER UNITED LEADING RACE FOR MEMPHIS DEPAY

The list of teams interested in Dutch winger Memphis Depay grows by the day, but the PSV Eindhoven star’s next destination appears to be a foregone conclusion.

Manchester United is the frontrunner for Depay’s services, and former Dutch National Team star Ronald DeBoer believes Depay will reunite with Louis van Gaal, who he played for at last summer’s World Cup with the Netherlands.

Liverpool is reportedly interested in Depay as well, but Manchester United appears the more likely destination for the 21-year-old standout, who just recently helped lead PSV to its first Dutch League title in seven years.

SIMEONE SAYS ENGLISH CLUB STRUGGLES SHOULD BE A ‘WAKE-UP CALL’

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone considers the English Premier League a top league with great potential, but believes the league’s recent failures in Europe should serve as a wake-up call.

“The fact that there is no English team left in the last eight of the Champions League or in the Europa League is a wake-up call for the Premier League to look at why it is that, despite their great economic power and with all the many great footballers playing in England, Chelsea are so far ahead of everyone else and why they have no teams left in Europe,” Simeone said in a story written for Goal.com.

Simeone also broke down the remaining field in the UEFA Champions League, and even added that he believes winning the Spanish Premier League title is more difficult than winning the Champions League. Simeone’s Atletico Madrid won the Spanish title last season, and lost to Real Madrid in last year’s Champions League final.
