SBI MLS Team of the Week: Sporting Kansas City

The red-hot Sebastian Giovinco scored a hat-trick last Wednesday. Three days later, he was held largely in check.

Sporting Kansas City went into BMO Field this weekend and not only stymied Giovinco, but defeated a full-strength Toronto FC, 3-1, in the process. The impressive victory snapped a winless run that nearly stretched over a full month for Sporting KC, and also earned the club SBI’s MLS Team of the Week honors.

Benny Feilhaber opened the scoring for Kansas City in the 22nd minute, but his goal was canceled out seconds later by former U.S. Men’s National Team teammate Michael Bradley following a neat pass from Giovinco.

Sporting KC did not let that get to them, however, and found a winner seven minutes later through Krisztian Nemeth. The defense then bent but never broke before Jacob Peterson capitalized on a late chance to put the game out of reach.

Other teams in consideration for this week’s award were the LA Galaxy, Vancouver Whitecaps, and D.C. United.

What do you think about Sporting KC winning this week’s honors? Think the Galaxy or some other club were more deserving? Expecting Sporting KC to go on a run in the next few weeks?

  1. Using this logic “The impressive victory snapped a winless run that nearly stretched over a full month for Sporting KC, and also earned the club SBI’s MLS Team of the Week honors.” I guess you can expect to give this honor to Chicago or Philly anytime they win a game!?!?! Yes, there were other more deserving clubs this week.
