CONCACAF WCQ Rewind: El Tri wins in Honduras; Jamaica, Costa Rica victorious

Mexico-Honduras

Juan Carlos Osorio needed only one try to end the Honduran spell on Mexico.

Behind second-half goals from substitutes Jesus Corona and Jurgen Damm, El Tri picked up its first victory in Honduras in 50 years with a 2-0 triumph.

Corona broke the deadlock in the 67th minute with a nifty finish.

After a long-range free kick was headed away from by a Honduran defender, Corona got the first touch on the ball with a side-footed flick to bring it in front of him before unleashing a volley from top of the box that beat goalkeeper Noel Valladares to the bottom left corner.

Damm doubled the Mexican lead five minutes later when he worked his way into the box from the right flank before beating Valladares near-post. Valladares had little chance at saving the shot, as he was playing against a potential cross to a wide-open Mexican player on the far post.

The match was also marred by an unfortunate, gruesome injury to Honduras and Houston Dynamo midfielder Luis Garrido. Garrido was involved in a collision with Mexico’s Javier Aquino in the first half and suffered four torn ligaments in his right leg.

COSTA RICA 2, PANAMA 1

Costa Rica played without several of its stars on Tuesday, but it had just enough to get past Panama on the road, 2-1.

Bryan Ruiz and Marcos Urena tallied goals for Los Ticos in the second half before Luis Tejada got one back for Panama in a span of five minutes on a rainy and soggy night.

Ruiz opened the scoring in the 66th minute when an indirect free kick from the right side of the pitch was headed around in a scrum before it eventually landed in front of Ruiz’s feet near the 6-yard box. The Sporting CP forward then fired a quick shot past Panama’s Jaime Penedo to put the visitors ahead.

Two minutes later, Urena dribbled his way around two Panama defenders from the left wing before shooting a roller that got past an outstretched Penedo and into the bottom left corner.

Tejada got the home crowd back into the game in the 71st minute when his second shot attempt after a deflection sailed past Patrick Pemberton. Pemberton, though, would hold off a late series of attacks from Panama to secure the full three points for the visitors.

JAMAICA 1, HAITI 0

The Reggae Boyz got the win they needed to get back on track in the qualifying race, defeating Caribbean neighbor Haiti, 1-0, in San Salvador.

The match was closely contested throughout, as both sides created several scoring chances, only to be denied by the performances of both goalkeepers, Andre Blake and Johnny Placide.

Prior to Clayton Donaldson’s score in the 62nd minute, Blake made a leaping save on a distance attempt by Haiti’s Jeff Louis while Placide was able to deny a shot from point-blank range after a pass rolled across the 6-yard box and found an open Jamaican attacker.

Donaldson though, took advantage of Placide’s only moment of lapse as he headed home a cross from a corner kick when Placide was distracted while instructing the defense.

Jamaica now stands in third place in Group B, tied with Panama with three points though down by two in goal differential.

EL SALVADOR 0, CANADA 0

Riding high off an opening win last Friday, Canada picked up another point on Tuesday, earning a 0-0 draw at El Salvador.

The result marked just the first time Canada has picked up a point on the road in Central America since the 2004 World Cup qualifying process.

Les Rouges, however, had a chance to take all three points but MLS Rookie of the Year Cyle Larin’s header just after the half-hour mark bounced off the crossbar.

Dustin Corea generated the best scoring opportunities for the home side but Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan was able to deny Corea’s efforts twice to preserve the draw.

Canada holds second place in Group A with four points, two off leader Mexico and three ahead of El Salvador.

GUATEMALA 4, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES 0

Goals from four different players propelled Guatemala to a 4-0 win over St. Vincent and the Grenadines to keep pace with Group C leaders United States and Trinidad and Tobago.

Stefano Cincotta fired the opening salvo in the 23rd minute with a curling free kick before Minor Lopez, Dennis Lopez and Gerson Tinoco each tacked on a score for the visitors.

With the U.S. and T&T playing to a 0-0 draw, Guatemala now stands one point behind both teams in third place and is set to host the U.S. next for a March 25 meeting.

  1. Honduras got the brilliant coach from that incredibly over-regarded CR World Cup team, didn’t ya hear? 😉

Provided the USMNT makes the Hex, I would much rather travel to Toronto than San Pedro Sula, so I’m hoping these standings hold.

    • no idea why Pinto took that Honduras job.. and yes Toronto>SPS! I wonder if Canada would play a USA-CAN qualifier in Toronto or maybe Winnipeg or Edmonton.. where is their Columbus? maybe Muncton!

1/3 of the way to the HEX. right now it would be USA, TT, PAN, CRC, MEX, CAN

  2. Jurgen Damm scored for Mexico. Are they importing Germans now, too? Is he a Germexican? And what’s happened to Honduras? They have fallen into a deep hole with no bottom in sight.
