Criticism and skepticism have surrounded New York City FC’s acquisition of Frank Lampard since his arrival last summer, but it appears that the former Chelsea midfielder is on-track to make his season debut this week.

During NYCFC’s 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers on Sunday night, head coach Patrick Vieira revealed to Fox Sports 1’s Julie Stewart-Binks that the 37-year-old is nearing a return and could be in the squad against Toronto FC on Wednesday night and three days later against the New York Red Bulls.

Last season, Lampard made 10 MLS appearances, nine of which were starts. In those matches, the attacker scored three goals and added an assist.

Where do you think Lampard fits in with Vieira’s lineup? Which midfielder will have to make way for him to start?

  1. The Lampard debacle was one of about four major failures of the league or specific teams that led to me abandoning MLS.

Lampard was a joke back then. Still a joke today.

  2. Don’t worry it’ll take about 10 minutes for him to re-injure his calf again. Or maybe it’ll be his hamstring this time. Regardless fully expect him to see fewer matches this season than he did last year.

  3. Not needed righ now. Pirlo has the useless old fart position all locked down and Mix is just plain useless. Just sit tight and we’ll let you know.
