It took over 120 minutes for Cristiano Ronaldo to make an impact, but it was his penalty kick that sent Real Madrid into pandemonium.

Real defeated Atletico Madrid on penalty kicks, 1-1 (5-3), to win the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League at San Siro.

The Madridistas went a perfect five for five in the shootout, which culminated with the Portuguese star burying his effort in the fifth round. Juanfran’s penalty miss in the fourth round doomed Atletico when he shot struck the post.

Sergio Ramos was the recipient of a flicked header from Gareth Bale at the quarter hour mark and tapped his finish past Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak from close range to open the scoring. Atletico players were irate with the goal decision though, as Ramos appeared to be offside when Bale guided the ball into his path.

Atletico leveled the match at 1-1 in the 79th minute, when second-half substitute Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco smashed home a Juanfran cross.

Atletico, who suffered a heart-breaking result two years ago in the final, had an excellent chance to equalize in the early moments of the second half when Fernando Torres was taken down in the penalty box by Real defender Pepe. Antoine Griezmann’s penalty attempt struck the bar though, keeping Los Blancos out in front for the time being.

With the victory, Real captured their 11th Champions League crown, while Atletico suffers their third second-place finish in the club’s history.
