It seems like another American is on the cusp of a top-flight managerial role in Europe.
Former U.S. Men’s National Team forward David Wagner, who is currently in charge of Huddersfield Town in the English Championship, is reportedly set to take over Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, according to Bild. The German club is in search for a third manager since October having already replaced Dieter Hecking ahead of a reported replacement of Valérien Ismaël during the Bundesliga’s winter break.
Wagner currently has Huddersfield Town in fourth in the Championship, bidding for at least a promotion playoff spot. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, have struggled mightily this season, currently sitting in 15th, just safe from relegation but rightly displeased with their start.
While the move would hurt Huddersfield Town in their bid for promotion, Wagner’s departure was almost inevitable, after reportedly rebuffing approaches from Aston Villa and others. Wagner, who formerly took charge of Borussia Dortmund II under Jurgen Klopp, would become the second American manager in a top flight European league, joining Bob Bradley of Swansea City.
I blame the players, the club, the owners, the fans and the referee for his future failure….unless he succeeds then it’s all on him.
He’s German-American so any success he has will be attributed to others and failures will fall on his shoulders.
But pretty soon the only American manager in a major league.
He can replace Arena in 2018
