Rubio Rubin is in need of playing time, and the young American forward has found a new club that could offer him the games needed to further his young career.
FC Utrecht announced on Tuesday that Rubin has departed the club for Danish side Silkeborg IF. Rubio’s current contract, which ends after the 2017 season, will continue on to his new club.
The 20-year-old forward made 41 career appearances for Utrecht, but just three this season as he spent most of his time with the club’s reserve team.
“We were aware of Rubio Rubin when he was released in FC Utrecht,” said Silkeborg boss Peter Sorensen. “I subsequently sought info on him, including speaking with the U.S. national team coach Jürgen Klinsmann, who has recommended him. Rubin is a forward and can also play on the edge, and that is the position where we have been searching for a player.”
“It was a wish of Rubio to qualify for a place in a team in a European competition,” added Utrecht manager Erik ten Hag. “The possibilities at FC Utrecht were limited. With this transfer, we give him the opportunity to go elsewhere for his chance.”
Internationally, Rubin has four career caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team.
Been a little sad to watch these last two years. I enjoyed his short cameos for the US and thought he was a much better prospect than Wood. Reminded me of Chicharito with his hustle and bustle.
Rubin needed a change. Yes he’s still young, but he’s become stagnate. 2 yrs ago he was the rising star when at the U-20 WC….now he’s just another young player who’s struggling, and runs the risk of being overtaken by any number of new names (Perez, Ebobisse, Lennon, Akale, Wright, etc…).
He needs competitive minutes in if he’s ever going to get back on track. The forward talent pool is getting deeper and better. With players like Jozy, Wood, & Morris, likely the top 3 striker options…and Dempsey, Agudelo, ArJo, Green, Boyd, and others still in contention he needed something to give him a kick in the ass.
That’s usually the plan. To get young players playing time elsewhere when they cant get regular minutes at their own club. But its also used to offload players and gives another team a trial period to decide to meet the but clause/transfer price. Let’s hope it the former.
if he gets first team mins I say good move, still young enough to go on to bigger and better leagues in the future
