Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview (Brooks vs. Adams, Musah vs. Miazga, and more)

John Brooks and Tyler Adams are set to anchor the heart of the U.S. men’s national team defense when World Cup qualifying begins in September, but before they head to the United States, the two Bundesliga standouts will square off against each other in a clash of Champions League sides.

Brooks and Wolfsburg face Adams and RB Leipzig on Sunday in one of the better matches in Europe this weekend. Adams and Leipzig are fresh off a big win against Stuttgart while Brooks and Wolfsburg have the distinction of being the only team in the Bundesliga to start the new campaign with two wins.

This weekend’s Americans Abroad action could see some debuts for players at new clubs. Matt Miazga has joined La Liga side Alaves, and could debut this weekend against Yunus Musah and Valencia, with Musah nearing closer to a return from an ankle injury.

In Italy, Gianluca Busio is making his debut with Venezia, starting in Friday’s match against Udinese.

Comments

  1. Dybala playing horrible and McKennie was subbed off at halftime. He needs to get the heck out of Juventus. Allegri says McKennie is an attacking mid but he’s more of a box to box.

    Reply
  2. Gio Reyna started and scored a beauty at the 49th minute in the Bundesliga game between Borussia Dortmund & Hoffenheim. Reyna was subbed out at the 62nd minute. Hoffenheim equalized twice at the 61st and 90th, but Dortmund got the winner goal through who else, Haaland at 90’+1′. Finally a win for Dortmund. With Hummels and Emre Can out injured, Dortmund’s defense is very shaky.

    Reply
    • Imagine if Reyna, Bellingham, and Håland were to stick together for the next five years. They would be absolutely fearsome.

      Reply
    • Oh no! I didn’t tune in until Venezia were already down 2-0, but the good news is Busio is still on the pitch when most of the midfield and attack has been subbed out. Going the full 90 in your first start is no small feat.

      Reply
      • Busio looked calm and composed, good on his touches and short passes. Not too bad for his Serie A debut for an 18-year old! On Udinese’ 2nd goal, upon a high press Busio did lose possession in Venezia’s final third in the middle outside the box. Udinese scored on the same sequence. Overall, I think Busio did well.
