Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Carter-Vickers, Sargent, and more

Cameron Carter-Vickers has been a rock in Celtic’s backline for most of the Scottish Premiership season, but on Wednesday night in Glasgow, the American defender delivered in front of goal for a crucial home win in league play.

Carter-Vickers scored the winning goal for Ange Postecoglou’s side in a 2-0 victory over St. Mirren, staying three points clear of rivals Rangers in the league table. The U.S. men’s national team centerback arrived in the box on a corner kick in the 55th minute and was able to volley home a failed clearance, giving Celtic a breakthrough goal in front of its home fans. It was Carter-Vickers’ fourth goal of the season and proved to be the spark that kept Celtic top of the league standings. Callum McGregor added an insurance goal in the final minutes at Celtic Park, padding the victory for Celtic, which next travels to Livingston on March 6.

In England, Josh Sargent came off of the bench and registered one assist in Norwich City’s F.A. Cup loss to Liverpool. Christian Pulisic helped Chelsea earn a comeback road win over Luton Town.

In Spain, Yunus Musah played the final 19 minutes off of the bench as Valencia booked a spot in the Spanish Copa Del Rey. Matthew Hoppe appeared off of the bench for Mallorca, but the La Liga side could not avoid defeat to visiting Real Sociedad.

Elsewhere, Brenden Aaronson logged 90 minutes for Red Bull Salzburg in a scoreless draw with LASK. Ian Harkes went the distance for Dundee United in a 2-1 loss to Livingston in the Scottish Premiership.
