Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Horvath, Pulisic, and more

Nottingham Forest remained in the discussion for a promotion playoff spot in the English Football League Championship on Friday with goalkeeper Ethan Horvath rising to the occasion once again for the club.

Horvath made five saves on Friday as Steve Cooper’s side left Bramall Lane with one point in a 1-1 road draw with Sheffield United. The U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper kept Nottingham Forest in the match with some top saves in his third-consecutive start. Horvath denied Billy Sharp from grabbing his second goal of the match in the 69th minute while also repelling Daniel Jebbison’s stoppage-time effort. Nottingham Forest equalized in the 95th minute, extending its unbeaten run to six matches across all competitions. The 26-year-old Horvath made 10 saves during his three starts in Brice Samba’s absence, conceding only one goal and registering two clean sheets.

With the USMNT’s top two goalkeepers Matt Turner and Zack Steffen currently dealing with injuries, Horvath could force his way into Gregg Berhalter’s plans ahead of this month’s final trio of World Cup Qualifiers.

In England, Christian Pulisic scored once and assisted once as Chelsea routed Burnley 4-0 at Turf Moor. Josh Sargent went the distance for Norwich City, but the Canaries lost 3-1 at home to Brentford. Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream both went the distance for Fulham in an impressive 2-0 home victory over Blackburn Rovers. Marlon Fossey registered two assists for Bolton Wanderers in a road win over Gillingham.

In Germany, John Brooks and Wolfsburg shutout Union Berlin 1-0 at home. Joe Scally played 90 minutes for Borussia Moenchengladbach in a 3-2 loss to Stuttgart. Nico Carrera made his league debut for Holstein Kiel.

In Spain, Yunus Musah started for Valencia and logged 74 minutes in a 3-1 win over Granada. Sergino Dest came off of the bench as Barcelona edged Elche 2-1 away from home.

Elsewhere, Erik Palmer-Brown helped Troyes earn a 2-0 road win over Bordeaux. Cameron Carter-Vickers logged another 90 minutes for Celtic in a 3-1 win over Livingston. Bryan Reynolds retained his spot in Kortrijk’s starting lineup while Jordan Pefok scored his 16th league goal of the season for Young Boys. 1. Besides trying to fill the hole left by McKennie’s injury, the other big issue for the March qualis has to be striker. Pepi didn’t even get off the bench this weekend. Both Sargent and Pefok need to be on the roster this month, as they are looking like the best options right now, but I wonder if we shouldn’t look at a tactical tweak to play Pulisic, Weah, or Aaronson centrally since we seem to have so many more options at winger.

    • I don’t hate those thoughts, but some things to think about. Weah didn’t get off the bench either and has 0g 4a this season but has been one of our three best players throughout qualifying. So maybe club form isn’t as important as thought. Pulisic likes to get the ball and run at defenders if he plays centrally for the US he’d almost always being showing back to the ball and going the opposite of where he wants to be headed. Aaronson’s 10 in a diamond for Salzburg is very different from McKennie or Musah’s dual 8 space. I guess if you mean as a false 9 he’d be operating like Ferreira.

      Reply
      • Johnny, I guess I was thinking more of a false nine, which hasn’t always looked good with the USMNT I admit. And maybe Ferreira should be the choice since he has some experience with the team in that spot, but like you I am not in love with the idea. Just feeling a little nervous about the lack of real options at striker in the most important games of the cycle, and wondering how to get our best attacking players on the field at the same time.
