Ethan Horvath, Zack Steffen continue strong form in EFL Championship

Ethan Horvath and Zack Steffen have earned starting roles in the English Football League Championship this season, and both are starring at the right time with the FIFA World Cup just 19 days away from kicking off.

Horvath and Steffen remained in goal for Tuesday’s slate of league matches, helping their clubs to positive results to kick off November’s schedule. Horvath posted a three-save shutout for Luton Town in a goal-less draw with Reading, while Steffen made one save in a 3-1 road victory for Middlesbrough.

The Nottingham Forest loanee has registered seven clean sheets in his 18 league appearances to date, helping Nathan Jones’ squad to a current 10th-place position. Horvath has registered three shutouts in his last six appearances, including victories over Norwich City, QPR, and West Bromwich Albion.

Luton Town next travels to Blackpool on Saturday before visiting Stoke City on Nov. 8 and hosting Rotherham United on Nov. 12.

Steffen has returned from his September injury to reclaim the No. 1 job in the Middlesbrough squad. The 27-year-old has earned three victories from his past seven league appearances, helping Michael Carrick’s squad to a current 18th place position.

Middlesbrough hosts Bristol City on Saturday before final first-half matches against Blackpool and Norwich City over a four-day period.

Both players will not only be hoping to seal their places in Gregg Berhalter’s final USMNT roster next week, but make the No. 1 job theirs for the Americans’ first World Cup involvement since 2014. The USMNT faces Wales in its opening match on Nov. 21 before taking on England and Iran respectively on the 25th and 29th.
