EFL Cup semifinals headline This Week’s Soccer on TV and Online

It has been a long time since this year’s EFL Cup semifinalists have had a day in the sun, which will make it all the sweeter when their fans get to celebrate a trophy lift.

This week’s semifinal matchups of Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United vs Southampton headline this week’s soccer viewing options.

Manchester United’s last earned trophy was the EFL Cup in the 2016-2017 season. The Red Devils are the obvious favorites in this year’s remaining cast and just need to maintain a 3-0 lead over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday to book their spot in the final.

Newcastle holds a 1-0 lead over Southhampton which should be manageable for their second-leg tie on Tuesday. The Magpies have not won a domestic trophy since 1999 and will be fighting to lift a first League Cup trophy in club history.

Coppa Italia quarterfinal matches share the spotlight this week. Tuesday’s Inter Milan – Atalanta tie headlines the action, and Thursday’s Juventus – Lazio contest could represent the former’s last shot at a trophy for some time.

Worth a mention, Thursday’s FIFA Club World Cup contest between Al Ahly and Auckland City determines the Seattle Sounders’ first-round opponent in their tournament debut this weekend.

This Week’s Top 5 Matches to Watch

  1. Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest – Manchester United fans have waited a long time to see their team in a final, and probably will need to see the final whistle to believe the dog days are officially over.
  2. Newcastle United vs Southampton – Newcastle can not be ruled out as a credible cup champion this year, and should be able to close out this series.
  3. Inter Milan vs Atalanta – The strongest head to head matchup of the week.
  4. Juventus vs Lazio – Juventus, down bad after a loss to Monza this weekend, is still reeling from its recent financial fair play penalties but must try to stay alive in the competitions it’s still in.
  5. Mainz 05 vs Bayern Munich – Bayern hasn’t won a game since November 12, amassing an uncharacteristic four-game winless skid. Can Mainz pull off a cupset in the DFB Pokal?
