Timothy Weah has played a substitute role in Lille’s dynamic attack since the resumption of the Ligue 1 season this winter, but the American winger could reportedly be on the move with several European clubs targeting him.
La Liga club Sevilla, as well as English Premier League sides Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Everton are all interested in acquiring Weah, French outlet L’Equipe reported Thursday. Weah’s current contract with Lille is set to run until June 2024 and the Ligue 1 side values him at €15 million, according to the report.
The 22-year-old impressed for the U.S. men’s national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, scoring once in four starts under manager Gregg Berhalter. Despite missing the first two months of the Ligue 1 season through a foot injury, Weah battled back to start three of his six Lille appearances prior to the World Cup.
Weah joined Lille in June 2019 on a permanent deal from Paris Saint-Germain and is closing in on 100 appearances for the club. He has scored eight goals and registered eight assists in 85 appearances for Lille, featuring in both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League for the club.
Weah also enjoyed a positive loan spell with Scottish Premiership club Celtic in 2019, scoring four goals in 17 appearances for the eventual league champions. He has earned 29 caps for the USMNT to date, winning the Concacaf Nations League in 2021.
Lille sits seventh in the Ligue 1 table, three points back of the top-four and 16 points back of league-leaders PSG.
Interesting. Is he going to be used as an attacker for those clubs? Fulham would be a great spot for him.
Could be the reason why Lille has only used him as a sub. Don’t want to hurt a potential transfer.
meh. i think one thing american fans routinely miss is the effect of coaching changes on players’ roles. weah had worked his way up from sub to starter for the last few games of 21-22 under gourvennec, but they dropped from 1st to 10th while that happened and he got fired and they brought in fonseca. he got hurt and missed several games, he has started one wing game since, and other than that he’s been either a RB experiment or wing sub. i assume the wingback experiment was displeasing to one or both sides so he’s back to subbing as a wing. i’d say it serves multiple purposes. he’s surplus to fonseca, they’ve given up on RB, and it does bubble wrap him for transfer as you say. but to be real if he wasn’t playing back he was most of the time playing like 25′ max anyway.
a certain breed of american fan who believes in the invisible hand tends to think such treatment is always objective and fair. he is not playing well so bad things happen. in reality he had a couple goals in 25′ in one of his sub appearances. this was his pattern at PSG and celtic, is when he played things would happen. i wouldn’t assume he was off song. sometimes it’s just compatibility with a personality and a system. but i do think him dropping down a notch where the recruiting team wants him there to start, would benefit all concerned.
re FFC, they are alright this season, well organized, but i think they could stand an upgrade either RF or RB. the whole offense is feed mitro. that could stand some diversification. i was a stansfield fan but he got loaned out.
if we’re going todiscuss breeds of American fans, let’s not forget the tactical midgets who don’t understand game to game adjustments and actually think there’s this way to play, or that way etc.
that’s a unevolved breed of American soccer fan
