Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Weah faces Balogun, and more

Ligue 1 play continues this weekend with two of the rising talents squaring off in Stade Reims’ home showdown with Lille.

Tim Weah and Folarin Balogun will go head-to-head for the second time this season with both players seeking a strong ending to their respective campaigns. Weah has mainly featured at right back for Lille during the second half of the season, providing the U.S. men’s national team attacker with his best opportunity to see the field regularly. Weah has made 24 league appearances for Paulo Fonseca’s squad and could be tasked with keeping the lively Balogun in check.

Balogun leads Stade Reims with 18 league goals this season, but has failed to score in each of his last three appearances as Will Still’s squad have lost three-in-a-row. The potential USMNT striker has enjoyed a positive loan spell from English Premier League club Arsenal and could be on the move this summer with plenty of Europe’s top teams taking notice in the 21-year-old phenom.

In England, Brenden Aaronson, Weston McKennie and Leeds United face a trip to Manchester City. Antonee Robinson and Fulham take on Leicester City. Lynden Gooch and Sunderland take on Preston North End as the Black Cats remain alive for the promotion playoffs.

In Spain, Yunus Musah and Valencia continue their quest for survival with a head-to-head showdown with Luca De La Torre and Celta Vigo.

In Scotland, Malik Tillman and Rangers take on Aberdeen seeking a bounce-back result. Ian Harkes and Dundee United resume their fight to remain in the Scottish Premiership.

Elsewhere, Mark McKenzie and Genk take on Royal Antwerp in Belgian Pro League action. Reggie Cannon and Alex Mendez continue their Portuguese league schedule. Haji Wright and Antalyaspor welcome Besiktas to town.

  1. Might want to start adding Leonard Maloney of Heidenheim in 2 Bundesliga to the Americans abroad. He has switched from CB to DM and Heidenheim are about to get promoted to the Bundesliga. Has been really good at the six since the switch. Could be a potential Tyler Adams competition at the 6. Competition for spots is a good thing.
