Dundee United’s relegation will lead to many players seeking new opportunities elsewhere this summer and American midfielder Ian Harkes is one of them.
Harkes is one of six players who will leave Dundee United this June following the expiration of their contracts, the club announced Tuesday. The Tangerines suffered relegation to the Scottish Championship on Sunday following a 3-2 Premiership defeat to Motherwell, their fifth of the playoff schedule.
Harkes made 31 combined league appearances for Dundee United this season, scoring three goals and adding two assists. The 28-year-old joined Dundee United in 2019, helping the Scottish club earn promotion later that campaign.
In total, Harkes registered 12 goals and 12 assists in 165 combined appearances for Dundee United, logging over 12,300 minutes for the club. He previously came through the DC United academy before playing collegiately at Wake Forest University
Harkes played two seasons with DC United before making the move to Scotland.
Harkes is GOOD, watch him play, very underrated
looking more like his dad every day.
SPL has done him good and i’d consider just hanging around. dundee got promoted when dundee united went down so he might not even have to move if he’s so inclined.
Usually not looked well upon to go from one team in town to the other. His wife did play for Celtic for awhile but I don’t think she still does.
i generally agree but this is him being dumped rather than transferring. it is nonetheless a fair point and maybe he could go someplace non-old firm also outside of dundee. that’s 9 choices. i think he could come back to MLS but would likely be in for a rude awakening here, maybe a rotational guy like he was at DC before. he might also handle something like holland, scandinavia, austria. i could see him getting ambitious but i think he missed the window for this year to come home and get a NT look in the summer at GC. that window won’t come around for 2 more years. jumping up to first 23 to make Copa America 24 next year would be a big ask. maybe he could get looked at in january camp. that’s about what i think he could hope for moving back as he’s not some bushels goalscorer and we love numbers.
