U.S. Under-20 men’s national team head coach Mikey Varas has already been forced into his first roster change ahead of the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Orlando City fullback Michael Halliday has replaced Mauricio Cuevas on the roster due to the defender picking up an ankle injury. After FIFA granted U.S. Soccer’s request to have Cuevas replaced, Halliday has been added to the 21-player roster for the World Cup.

Per regulations, an injured player may be replaced on the roster up to 24 hours prior to a team’s opening match. The replacement must come from the 55-player provisional roster and approved by the tournament medical committee.

Halliday was a part of the USMNT U-20 squad that won the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship in Honduras last summer, playing in six of seven matches. Most recently, Halliday was called in for the USMNT U-20’s March training camp in Spain, appearing against France and England.

The 20-year-old has featured in 12 combined matches for the Lions in MLS and Concacaf Champions League play this season.

The USMNT U-20’s kick off Group B play on May 20 against Ecuador before facing Fiji on May 23 and Slovakia on May 26.

  1. U20’s with last minute goal from Gomez with the 1-0 win! Have to start Yappi next game. He brought something extra in that second half.

  2. So we brought a 9 and Varas starts Luna at the 9 instead of Yappi?.?.?.? Have to say I don’t get what Varas is doing at times.

  3. Is soccer should be streaming all WC youth tournaments for free on their website. I shouldn’t have to pay to watch youth tournaments. Such a bummer the U20 WC is on fox soccer plus. Shouldn’t have to pay extra for YOUTH tournaments.

  4. That’s hard for Cuevas: don’t think there is much talent difference between those two players to be honest. And Halliday has much more first team experience.
