The MLS Players Union released the salaries of every player in the league on Tuesday with several familiar faces remaining up at the top.
Chicago Fire star Xherdan Shaqiri remained ranked No. 1 with the highest annual salary as he continues his second MLS season. Toronto FC attacker Lorenzo Insigne and LA Galaxy forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez rounded out the top three, remaining among the highest-paid players in the league.
Shaqiri signed a Designated Player contract in his move to MLS and makes roughly $7,350,000 in his base salary. His total guaranteed compensation is $8,153,000, more than $600,000 higher than Insigne who is second ($7,500,000) on the list.
Chicharito’s base salary is currently $6,000,000 while his guaranteed compensation rounds out at $7,443,750.
Toronto FC also has the No. 4 highest salary on its roster with Federico Bernardeschi currently sitting in that spot ($6,295,381.00, guaranteed compensation). Austin FC’s Sebastian Driussi sits fifth as the only other MLS player with a guaranteed compensation over $6 million ($6,022,500).
Hector Herrera, Douglas Costa, Luiz Araujo, Christian Benteke, and Josef Martinez complete the top 10 earners in MLS, adding to the growing trend of top offensive talent in the league. NYCFC defender Thiago Martinez is the highest-ranked defender on the list, earning just under $2.2 million ($2,112,000).
St. Louis CITY SC goalkeeper Roman Burki ranks as the highest earner at his position, earning $1,632,469. Orlando City’s Pedro Gallese is second with a salary of $869,375 and Columbus Crew’s Eloy Room is third with $898,000.
