Anthony Hudson’s current time with the U.S. men’s national team is over with the former interim head coach embarking to Qatar for the next chapter of his career.

Hudson announced on his Instagram that he is joining Qatari side Al-Markhiya SC. The 42-year-old departs the USMNT after serving as interim head coach since January 2023.

“I would like to thank U.S. Soccer for the opportunity to be part of such a great team of players and staff,” Hudson said last week following U.S. Soccer’s announcement of B.J. Callaghan being promoted to interim head coach. “It’s been an honor to represent the National Team and one that I have truly valued and enjoyed. The group is in good hands with B.J., and I’m excited to watch and support the team as it continues to grow and reach the heights we all know they are capable of.”

Hudson originally joined the USMNT in 2021 as an assistant coach on Gregg Berhalter’s staff. He led the Americans to wins against Grenada and El Salvador during the Concacaf Nations League schedule in March.

He also continued the effort to pursue dual nationals that resulted in a number of players (Folarin Balogun, Timothy Tillman) choosing to represent the United States.

Hudson previously served as head coach of the Bahrain and New Zealand national teams before moving to the Colorado Rapids in 2017. He also served as USMNT U-20 head coach from 2020-21.

Al-Markhiya SC won promotion during the 2021-22 campaign after winning the Qatari second division.

  1. coach needs to leave for foreign league. foreign NT is almost exclusively domestic from that same league. many key league players will be at tournament with foreign NT which suggests to me preseason and league start are later this year. tournament is gold cup. qatar is an invited participant in gold cup. see what i am getting at?
