Tanner Tessmann added to USMNT September roster

U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter has been forced into an early change to his roster ahead of upcoming friendlies vs. Uzbekistan and Oman.

Tanner Tessmann has been added to the roster, replacing injured midfielder Johnny Cardoso. Cardoso has been ruled out of international duty with an ankle injury, U.S. Soccer announced Saturday.

Tessmann, 21, made his senior USMNT debut in the USMNT’s 7-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in January 2021. An Alabama native, Tessmann is a product of the FC Dallas youth academy.

Tessmann is in his third season with Italian Serie B side Venezia, where he has accumulated four goals and two assists in 61 combined appearances. He recently scored the winning goal for Venezia in a 2-1 league victory over Sampdoria.

Cardoso, 21, has spent his entire club career to date with Brazilian Serie A side Internacional. He has scored seven goals and added four assists in 132 club appearances, recently featuring in Copa Librtadores action.

The USMNT faces Uzbekistan in St. Louis on Sept. 9 before taking on Oman in St. Paul, Minn on Sept. 12.

  1. Noel Buck called into England U19’s. He is claiming England has shown more interest than the US…. bogus claim he has been in multiple US u19 camps.

    • I think he’s still upset he didn’t get brought to U20 WC. When you look at the CMs we took McGlynn, Edelman, Wolfe, Vargas all had more MLS experience and his numbers weren’t anything exceptional compared to them. UEFA seems to have more age group tournaments, but he’s years away from representing England at the NT level and maybe 4 months away from US January camp. Has the feel of Soto saber rattling about Chile to get a US call up. If Southgate wouldn’t call Balo because he plays in France he ain’t calling someone in MLS.

      • What was released is that New England wasn’t going to release him for the U20 WC same as Miami with Cremanschi.

      • Well maybe no one at USSF mentioned that to him. So NE wouldn’t release him in the spring for the World Cup but will release him for a couple friendlies right before the playoff push?
        —————————
If perhaps we had a U23 coach hired that guy could have talked to him about next months Olympics prep camp but we don’t really like to hire anyone on time.

      • Funny thing about Noel Buck, people are acting like he is killing it in the MLS. You can tell none of them watch MLS. Noel Buck missed like around 4-6 weeks due to an inury and since his been back he lost his starting job. New England has made two signings in midfield who have jumped over Buck in the starting lineup. I can see Buck wanting to be at the U20 WC, he was playing pretty good around that time

  2. This might be a blessing in disguise. We already know what Johnny Cardoso is about in the USMNT midfield, so its time to evaluate new talent. Evaluating Tanner Tessmann is tricky because he plays in serie B but from his hightlights, scouting report and PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES he might be a good addition piece to the USMNT.

    Age: 21 years
Height: 6′ 2″ (like quozz said CB height!!!)
    Position: CM/DM/AM (all around midfielder)

    Abilities:
Strong physical midfielder who has an eye for a pass each time he receives the ball.
Using his strength and body to protect the ball and maintain possession
Able to assess the field and thread the needle for a pinpoint through balls to those making runs and create chance (with accuracy).,
He can dribble adequately and likes to dribble up the pitch.
He likes to play with the ball at his feet and dictate play with great composure on the ball.
He has great vision with the ability to pick out a pass for those making runs behind the defense.

As a box-to-box midfielder, he provides cover for the defense as well.
His game involves tracking back to make key tackles, to win the ball back and has the awareness is phenomenal to start the attack again.
He understands his defensive duties and provides cover for the defense when occupied as the defensive midfielder. And when he is a defensive midfielder, he operates more as a deep-lying playmaker providing long-balls and crossfield passes to this teammates.

I hope he really impresses in camp

    • Pretty much accurate analysis of him. Many Serie A teams have been scouting him for the past couple of years. Venezia has a real chance at gaining promotion with his help this season why they haven’t entertained offers. They know his transfer fee will increase significantly if they gain promotion. If he has another really good season and they don’t gain promotion he will still be a transfer target next summer. It’s a win win situation for Venezia either way.

    • Agree with almost all of that except I’m not the one who said he’d make a great CB and I think his bread’s going to be buttered as a 6, or better yet as one of the dual 6’s in a double pivot because that gives him the freedom to see space and take space when the hole opens for him. And he does like to rumble forward. If you’re going to play him as a CB he’s going to be a David Luiz type…Sideshow Bob wouldn’t stay put as a CB either, so if you were going to play Luiz as a CB it needed to be as the center point of a five-man backline who had cover behind him, or he could get you burned. Like Luiz, Tessmann’s a dribbler…and dribblers dribble.

I don’t know if Tessmann’s ready for the Nats quite yet, but once he breaks through into Serie A he very likely will be. He’s definitely a guy to track, IMHO.

      • Quozzel,
“except I’m not the one who said he’d make a great CB “…. I didn’t, or anyone else for that matter, said anything close to “he’d MAKE A GREAT CENTERBACK”….. I simply mistakenly referred to you making LZ’s comment about the “CB height”. Just an FYI

    • I’m fine that Tessmann has been brought in but “We already know what Johnny Cardoso is about in the USMNT midfield,”. Johnny is 21 and has played 170 minutes for the NT. Only one of his appearances lasted more than 30 mins. Tessmann deseves this callup and on performance deserves it more than Benja but Johnny is far from a known quantity. Hopefully he can get healed up in time for the Libertadores semis on Sept 27.

      • Johnny Cardoso has had 7 call ups to the senior side (compared to Tessmann’s 1)…..that is 6 camps more than Tessmann to be tested and evaluated. We shouldn’t be done with Cardoso by any stretch of the imagination but I’m just saying after being in 7+ camps for the US they know what he brings to the table in terms of capabilities and limitations, and who he sits behind in terms of the midfield pecking order. It’s just great to give a player, with Tessmann’s physical attributes, a shot……given that they play almost the exact positions in the middle of the park

      • Ok I see what you’re saying but he’s been to three camps under Berhalter, 9/2020, Jan 2021, and 9/2022. Since last September he’s played in almost 50 matches locking down his position as a first choice starter for Internacional as a 6/8, after having been playing more as a wide midfielder last summer. I know BJ was there this spring and summer and I’m sure there’s video of the training sessions but if your looking for backups for Tyler, it wouldn’t have been a waste to see Johnny play 70-75 minutes against Oman. Cremanschi’s recruitment causes the problem. I’m sure we’re trying to lock him in for the Olympics and what better way than to introduce him to first team group. I think that is perfectly fine. All 3 Johnny, Cremanschi and Tessmann are Olympic eligible.

      • bizzy,

“I’m just saying after being in 7+ camps for the US they know what he brings to the table in terms of capabilities and limitations, ”

Gregg has had much more exposure to Johnny than to Tessmann but that doesn’t mean mean he knows” what he brings to the table in terms of capabilities and limitations.”

The only way to know that is by giving Johnny an extended run in meaningful game situations. And that has not happened for whatever reason.

You can call in a guy a million times but if you never give him a real chance to show what he can do in a game , over time, you don’t really know what you have.

Garbage time minutes against an already beaten, crap opponent where he may not even touch the ball doesn’t really tell you much about Johnny.

It’s a hard thing to do. Gregg has given extended opportunities like that to several players and it hasn’t quite worked out yet.

The USMNT unfortunately just does not offer that many meaningful opportunities, unlike what you might get at a club. With a national team you have to make a splash right away, like Flo did for example.

Or failing that you have to stir something deep in Gregg’s soul so that he sees something in you. I expect we’ll see Aaron Long, Roldan, Ariolla and Ferreira, guys who have apparently found the key to Gregg’s heart. I’m sure they will keep getting chances until they get it right.

Of course, it is possible that Gregg has already decided that he’s just not into Johnny that much. And Johnny is toast.

Tessman is the new flavor of the month for USMNT fans and shiny new stuff gets cycled through here all the time. And he’s big and strong another thing American fans obsess over.

I don’t really have a preference. Both of them are still pretty new to the business. The USMNT needs midfielders with a fair amount of positive experience.

The overhype machine such as it is is working overtime on both of them. It would not be surprising if both Johnny and Tessman fail to amount to much with the USMNT but go on to have strong club careers.

They are the same age separated by 4 days Transfermarkt has Johnny at 5 million and Tanner at 2.4 million.

Regardless, if you’re going to experiment, now is the time.

    • I liked that he was battling when a lot of the U23s seemed to check out, and would turn games almost by himself.

Personally my beef with the MF selects is not him as injury swap for another 6, it’s the lack of pure attacking talent among the other 4 guys besides him and Musah.

    • Definitely hoping this one comes good. You never know until you see them mesh with the group but I’ve thought this guy can definitely play in both Serie A and for the USMNT and has the potential to make himself a fixture if he develops to his ceiling. Will he? Dunno yet. He’s been in Serie B, so probably too soon to tell.

I personally think he’s a 6 for us…though he’s a whole lot more like Michael Bradley than Tyler Adams.

      • Mike Bradley was pretty darned good for a while. And c. 2019 GB wanted more of a passing 6. If Adams can’t stay healthy it will be interesting where we take the spot, do we try and get more playmaking or leave it a stopper slot. One of the odd mismatches of GB’s overall tactics has been pursuing possession soccer with a disruptor/box crash MF. To me it was like playing Klinsi’s tackling mids while trying to keep the ball, which is goofy. Pick one. If he wants to possess this needs to get more technical. If he wants to defend there are better defensive formations than 433.
