Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Balogun, Pulisic, and more

Folarin Balogun endured a tough day in his last time out for Ligue 1 side Monaco, but rebounded in a big way on Saturday against Marseille.

Balogun scored once and assisted once in Monaco’s 3-2 home win over Marseille, which was a bounce-back result for the club. The U.S. men’s national team striker’s right-footed shot in the 23rd minute tied the match at 2-2 before Balogun connected with Maghnes Akilouche for the eventual winning goal. Balogun’s pass was slotted home by the 21-year-old Frenchman, giving Adi Hutter’s squad a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Balogun’s four chances created were the most by any player in the match, while he also won four duels.

    • Yeah I think the issue is how fit he is. Is he 5-10 minutes fit or 60 minutes fit? I guess he did play a U23 friendly a couple weeks ago so as long as there was no setbacks he should be available.

  1. I just found out that Uly Llanez was in a car accident this summer and injured his elbow. The injury likely played a role in preventing him returning to SK Polten in Austria2. His contract is up in May so there was some rumblings that he wasn’t interested in transferring back there. Still Olympic eligible, even though it feels like he’s been around forever.

  2. – Tillman is starting to make himself indispensable at PSV. One cannot see him losing his spot in the lineup given his current form, and certainly an October Nats callup
    – Good to see Slolina getting starts between the pipes. With Horvath shelved until the next transfer window, he should get a callup this month.
    – With Adams out, it’ll be interesting to see if Reyna gets a call. His playing time has dwindled down significantly since returning from injury, so it a callup deserved? On the other hand, some game time may be just what he needs to work himself back into relevance.

    Reply
    • Reyna: if he’s fit he’ll be called. If BvB isn’t playing him because he’s not healthy enough to play more than a few minutes he might. If he can’t go and Dortmund is just giving him bench time for his vibes then he won’t.

After one game against the worst team in the league? Volendam sucks big time. PSV must have been pretty bad off if Malik is anywhere near being indispensable. It might be more apt to say that the Volendam game at least kept Malik from the diva shitbag doghouse after his oversleeping incident.

Unless you’re going to start him or play him a lot, Gregg should leave Slonina at home.

Adams has nothing to do with whether or not Gio gets called in..
Tyler’s injury means candidates to replace him , starting with Yunus, get more chances.

If it won’t exacerbate his injury, then Gio will be called in if only so that Gio and Gregg can have that burying the hatchet (hopefully not in Gio’s back) photo op.

Gio proved that as a #10 he can make this team go. If he’s at all healthy he should start.

  3. Glad Balogun bounced back (In my Big Sean Voice) after the two penalty miss. That French Algerian kid that scored twice was lit fire too 🔥 ⚽ 🥅

  4. Paredes building a case for more minutes and starts this season. Hopefully he can provide quality depth on the wings for the USMNT.

  5. Alegri should be on the hot seat. He needs to get Weah on the field. Perhaps try him at striker alongside Chiesa. Juve were wrong to get rid of Pirlo a couple seasons back. .ighr be time to bring him back.

    • Depends on how long Vlahovic and Millic are out as to if Weah gets minutes at F. Moises Keane has largely been a disappointment since being a highly touted teen but his goal scoring is still better than Tim has ever done. I still think moving Wes to CM is the more likely path to both Americans starting.
      —————————
Pirlo was pretty unsuccessful as a manager at Juve. Allegri might well get sacked but I don’t see Pirlo being brought back. He finished 7th last year in Turkey Fatih finished 8th the year before. His recently relegated Sampdoria is in 20th place in Serie B.

      Reply
      • He won two trophies the year who took over, and then had to deal with Ronaldo leaving the next season his full first season. Pirlo was trying to build a different way of playing style. Juve brass got mad and impsttient that they finished fourth that season. He shouldn’t have been fired.
