Former U.S. women’s national team head coach Vlatko Andonovski is back in the NWSL.
Andonovski has been named the new head coach and sporting director of the Kansas City Current, the club announced Monday. The Macedonian most recently served as USWNT head coach from 2020-23, registering a 51-5-9 record across all competitions.
He led the USWNT to a Concacaf W Championship in 2022, a Bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and four straight championships at the SheBelieves Cup (2020-2023).
“We are thrilled to welcome Vlatko to the Current,” said Kansas City Current co-owners Angie Long and Chris Long. “We talk all the time about our desire to be the best women’s football club in the world, with Vlatko that brings us one step closer to that goal. His football acumen and his penchant for developing talent will keep this teamcompetitive on the world stage and make Kansas City a destination club for players across the world.”
Andonovski was named the first head coach of FC Kansas City in 2013 and served in that role until 2017. He then served as head coach of Reign FC from 2018-19, totaling a 78-50-52 record across all competitions, between both clubs.
He was named NWSL Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2019 and is the only coach to achieve that honor with more than one club. Andonovski also led FC Kansas City to back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015.
“Kansas City is home, and always will be,” said Andonovski. “This club is very ambitious, and they have an ownership group willing to do what it takes to meet their goals. I am grateful to Angie, Chris, Brittany and Patrick for this opportunity to lead my hometown team. The fans here have always been passionate, and it has been so exciting to see them grow and make Kansas City one of the best atmospheres in the NWSL, and it will only get better in the new stadium.”
The KC Current finished 11th in the NWSL standings this past season, failing to reach the league playoffs.
