Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: McKennie, Trusty, and more

The 2022-23 Serie A campaign witnessed Napoli leading the pack on its way to a historic Scudetto title, but now its the defending champions doing the chasing this fall.

Weston McKennie and Juventus face off with Napoli in the headlining Serie A contest this weekend. The Old Lady are sitting second in the league standings, nine points clear of Napoli in the race for this season’s Scudetto. The 25-year-old McKennie has remained a key player for Massimiliano Allegri’s squad, totaling 14 appearances and one assist to date in league action. McKennie’s versatility has been important in the U.S. men’s national team midfielder bouncing back from a tough loan spell in England last winter/spring.

Juventus will rely once again on McKennie this weekend as it aims to extend its unbeaten run to 10 matches.

In England, Antonee Robinson, Tim Ream and Fulham host West Ham United. Auston Trusty and Sheffield United continue its quest to avoid relegation.

In Germany, Joe Scally and Brenden Aaronson square off in Bundesliga play. Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund take on RB Leipzig.

Elsewhere, Alex Zendejas and Club America host Atletico San Luis in the Liga MX Playoffs. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic visit Kilmarnock in SPFL play. 1. Terzic probably not happy with Gio on Leipzig’s goal by Poulsen’s to go up 3-1 in stoppage late.

if you haven’t seen it, check it out. he’d just been subbed on 10 minutes prior, no reason not to track back with urgency but still he doesn’t. maybe not the best way to catch a coach’s eye when trying to earn minutes that have been hard to come by

    • I mean sure but only Brandt even tries, there’s 6 other guys that just walked as well. Gio nearly tied the game in 95th if not for a great save.

      Reply
      • come on JR, terrible excuse for him to GIVE UP ON THE PLAY!! and Brandt had played the ENTIRE game to that point, Gio not even 10 minutes. and which player tried??? on a turnover in the middle channel middle third????

there is absolutely no excuse, except maybe Gio wants to be moved so gave that ‘effort’. I wonder if he’ll be called out for it in the locker room.

that play right there encapsulates what a spoiled player he is, and why he rides pine so often even tho he is uber talented. We all know he is uber talented…seems only some of us understand he is also a spoiled soccer player still way too often, and that that play, in his latest opportunity from Terzic, is simply Exhibit _____ of this reality.

If he mans up, sacks up, owns that reality and addresses it like a man, he’ll be awesome. If he doesn’t, then as a soccer player he’ll remain this uber talented disappointment. the list of these types is looooooong and sad

        it’s up to him

      • Beach, yes he should have tracked back but 6 other guys also didn’t make any attempt to get back including some closer to the play. So that tells me it’s as much a Terzic culture problem as it is a Reyna personal issue.

  2. Crystal Palace using Chris Richard’s as DM again today. Palace 1-0 up. Glad he is getting starts and minutes. Interesting ro see him playing at DM and doing well. Flexibility for another USMNT player. I like it.

  3. I watched only McKennie today without watching the ball. Most gave him a 6.5 or 7, whereas I thought it was more of a 7 to 7.5. He had two poor moments with the ball at his feet, but otherwise he was ALL over the field. He made a bunch of offensive runs where he created space for his teammates or they were just too selfish to pass. More importantly, as we know, he is a beast behind the ball. He closes down players with the ball like a terrier and no one wanted to take him on 1v1.

“Maybe we’ll see Matt Turner back between the posts this weekend.”

      Maybe but then what?

Vlachodimas doesn’t seem like he’s much better or worse than Matt.

Maybe Forest just isn’t the place for ANY keeper.

Cooper is very unlikely to keep switching between two #1 keepers.

Matt just left Arsenal who now face a similar battle between Ramsdale and Raya.

My guess is Vlachodimas is going to have to really play himself out of the job and if he does then as soon as the transfer window opens one of the two leave. Both he and Matt clearly expected to be #1 and this situation isn’t going to last.

      • I’d venture to say that Vlachlodimas is definitely worse than Turner except on the big guy who looks like a keeper metric. He’s given up more goals against worse opposition, which, to be fair to him is partly a function of Forest somehow getting worse and worse each week. But his footwork is awful, his reads and anticipation are not good, his distribution is definitely not as good (not that Forest have actually been able to take advantage of Turner’s distribution which is a particular strength of his). Maybe he makes the defenders feel more comfortable? Maybe he’s awesome in training? Maybe he gets the “he’s not an American and I won’t get as much shit for failing with him as a coach in the EPL” boost? But this choice was definitely not a part of a solution for Forest.

On the other hand, it is hard to see a coach admitting that he made this kind of mistake and switching back. But who knows?

      • nkh,

” Maybe he gets the “he’s not an American and I won’t get as much shit for failing with him as a coach in the EPL” boost? But this choice was definitely not a part of a solution for Forest.

Cooper has got much bigger problems than than admitting to mistakes or the “anti american ” lazy excuse, which is funny for a team that has two American keepers on their roster. Goalkeeper may be a problem but Forest also has bigger problems, like looming relegation.

He did well last season but I doubt the powers that be will be as patient this go around.

    • Johnny,

Agreed, Valachodimas did not play well, but if Vlachodimas is healthy, I doubt, we’ll see Turner this weekend.

To Vacqui’s point, I believe Vlachodimas will have to have multiple bad games before Cooper makes another GK change.

      Reply
      • It’s been 4 bad games in a row. He’s given up more goals than his xG faced. 7.17 xG to 12 goals allowed. That’s an average of one more goal per game than he should.
