Matt Turner rebounds to help Nottingham Forest reach FA Cup fifth round

Matt Turner has endured some tough moments during his first season with Nottingham Forest, however Wednesday’s outing against Bristol City will go down as one of his best for the club to date.

Turner made six saves including one key shootout save as Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad defeated the Robins 5-3 on penalties in their FA Cup fourth round replay. The result now pits Nottingham Forest against Manchester United later this month at the City Ground.

Divock Origi’s eighth-minute opening goal for Forest was cancelled out by Bristol City’s Jason Knight only six minutes later. Turner remained busy throughout the match, but helped keep the score level for the hosts.

The 29-year-old denied Anis Mehmeti and Tommy Conway in the opening half while also repelling Mehmeti’s effort later in the match. Sam Bell was also denied by Turner before the teams were forced into a shootout.

After Forest took a 2-1 shootout lead, Turner denied Bell’s second round effort to give the Premier League hosts an advantage. Despite Bristol City scoring their next two spot kicks, Forest went a perfect 5-for-5 from the spot to seal their spot in the last 16.

Turner will now fight to retain the starting job on Saturday when Newcastle United comes to town in league play.
