Nuno Espirito Santo not committing minutes to Gio Reyna despite strong USMNT window

Gio Reyna delivered a stellar international window with the U.S. men’s national team, but even despite that, the American attacker won’t be guaranteed an increased role at club level.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo praised the 21-year-old Reyna on Thursday ahead of the resumption of the English Premier League campaign this weekend. Reyna registered two assists in the USMNT’s 3-1 CONCACAF Nations League semifinal win over Jamaica before scoring the insurance goal in the Americans’ 2-0 triumph over rivals Mexico in the tournament final.

The Borussia Dortmund loanee earned Player of the Tournament honors as he lifted his third international trophy with the USMNT. However, despite his shining performances against both the Reggae Boyz and El Tri, Reyna won’t be guaranteed a larger role the the City Ground unless he earns it.

“Very happy because he was man of the match [against Mexico] and he did very well, so we need all the players because we have hard work and we need all of them,” Santo told media Thursday ahead of Forest’s league match vs. Crystal Palace on Saturday.

“We’re going to see more of everyone, because we need all of them,” he added. “They are aware that now is not important to have any feeling of selfishness. It’s about the team and if you play one minute, it’s for the team.”

Reyna has played just 39 minutes for Nottingham Forest since his loan move from Borussia Dortmund last January. He’s missed time due to a minor knock, but also was an unused substituted for multiple matches too.

With his club future unknown, Reyna will try and deliver over the final 11 weeks of the EPL season as Nottingham Forest tries to avoid relegation back to the EFL Championship.

A four-point deduction from the Premier League has Nottingham Forest sitting 18th heading into Saturday’s crucial showdown with the visiting Eagles.

  1. He didn’t say anything. A rather lousy click baiting article. He was as neutral as can be. Forest are in a bad situation and it was never a great move for Reynas skill set vs La Liga or even French or Dutch sides. I don’t think posters even k ow of thr manager… he arrived not so long before Reyna did which is another reason why this move was bad for Reyna – maybe he never wanted him.

      • That was back in the 80’s. A very , very long time ago.

They have been marginal ever since.

If they expect to be respected NOW they need to re-earn it.

    • Nuno and Gio share an agent, Jorge Mendes. Nuno was literally Mendes’ first client as a player. Gio wasn’t rumored to Forest until Nuno got there, so perhaps Mendes pushed his longtime client but Nuno brought Gio in.

  2. Always thought Nuno was a pretty decent manager but… relegation battles get people gripping hard. Seems to manifest in deer in the headlights hyper-conservativism. Is Gio the answer to what ails NF? Who knows, but he brings something they currently don’t have much of and… I were Nuno I’d rather go out fighting trying to find answers rather than flailing, doing the same sh*t that isn’t cutting it, hoping for different results. That IS insane and likely a one way ticket to the championship.

More of this nonsense and Reyna gonna be tapping those ruby boots of his… there’s no place like home…. there’s no place like home. Playing time at NF or not- Dortmund is a better place for a player with his age/profile. I think Dortmund won’t settle for 4th place- figures this out and aborts on hopeless Terzig so Gio can go home and resume fighting there with a fresh start. Maybe Dortmund can start playing palatable football again.

    • All Nuno said was he doesn’t care what Gio did for the USMNT. He’s focused on what Gio can do for Forest.

This is all a lot of noise about nothing. If you’ve watched all the games where Gio was available, the guys ahead of him were playing lights out..

Under normal circumstances, eventually, those guys would tire, get hurt or lose form, then Gio could come in and make his case. And if Gio were Forest property, Nuno would need to give him some time to develop or for Nuno to see what Gio has.

But we all know what is going on. Gio is gone at season’s end. So right now Gio ain’t getting on the field unless he has to, meaning, those guys in front of him, lose form, get hurt or drop dead from exhaustion.

“Forest is barely averaging one goal per game. ” Forest’s problem is they can’t hold a lead. So even if they scored more, no one thinks they could hold the lead. Forest brought in the wrong American. They needed Tyler in his best form or Chris Richards at his best.

I seriously doubt anyone thinks Gio isn’t good enough but right now he’s a luxury that they don’t need. He’s good enough but he has no time to get integrated . It’s possible that Gio would do great but Nuno can’t take the risk.

There are about 9 games left . It’s not to late for Gio to have a run of good games and make an impression . But more likely he won’t play a minute the rest of the year.

It’s one thing to play for the USMNT where everyone rates you and you know exactly what to do as opposed to playing for Forest with a bunch of guys you’ve basically, just met and have never really played a game with.

The other thing to remember is that beating up on Jamaica and Mexico is not the same as taking on Palace, Fulham, Spurs, Wolves, Everton, Man City, Sheffield United, Chelsea and Burnley, most of whom will be desperate to get points.

  3. Technically he didn’t take a stance one way or the other….

    ….

    ….

However, everyone can read between those lines and realize that Gio’s time at Forest isn’t seeing any significant change.
