Tyler Adams makes 2024 debut following USMNT call-up

Thursday will go down as one of the more memorable days in recent time for U.S. men’s national team midfielder Tyler Adams.

Adams made his 2024 debut for Bournemouth, helping close out a 4-3 English Premier League victory over Luton Town. The USMNT midfielder played the final 19 minutes at the Vitality Stadium, just hours after earning his first international call-up in 16 months.

It marked Adams’ second Bournemouth appearance following his transfer last summer from Leeds United.

The Cherries had to overcome a 3-0 halftime deficit to steal three points against the visiting Hatters. Dominic Solanke, Illia Zabarnyi, and Antoine Semenyo all scored in a 14-minute span after halftime to tie the match at 3-3 before Semenyo’s second tally with seven minutes to play ultimately decided the final score.

Adams replaced Adam Smith in the 71st minute and delivered a solid cameo as Bournemouth hung on for its first home league victory since December 26.

Despite only just returning to competitive action, USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter admitted Adams’ fight to get back on the field should help him in the upcoming international window.

“This decision was basically the output of months of communication with his club, to track where he’s at, to see the levels that he’s performing at in training, the loads that he’s doing and training,” Berhalter said of Adams during Thursday’s conference call. “And then finally a conversation with his coach two days ago, and really hearing from the coach, where he thinks Tyler’s at, he couldn’t say enough good things about him. Certainly they think at the club that he has enough to play up to 45 minutes for us.

“So once we heard that, we jumped at that idea because he means so much to the team, both on and off the field,” Berhalter added. “It’ll be nice to get him back. His last time with the national team was at the World Cup, so he’s been missed for a while and it’ll be nice to get him back into this group.”

Bournemouth now has a lengthy gap in its schedule due to the upcoming FA Cup slate and the FIFA international break. Adams will have the opportunity to rest and recover before heading to Arlington, Texas for the CONCACAF Nations League showdown with Jamaica.

His role in the match with the Reggae Boyz remains unknown, but Adams’ presence ultimately should provide a boost to the USMNT.
