Tyler Adams named to Bournemouth squad for first time since October

Tyler Adams did not feature in Bournemouth’s comeback draw with Sheffield United on Saturday, but his return to the sidelines was a huge positive nonetheless.

Adams dressed in Andoni Iraola’s squad for the first time since re-aggravating his hamstring injury last October. The 25-year-old midfielder was an unused substitute during the Cherries’ 2-2 Premier League draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Adams featured for Bournemouth’s developmental squad last Tuesday in a 5-0 win over Colchester United. The U.S. men’s national team captain had missed the last five months due to his second hamstring injury in the past year.

Iraola remains pleased with Adams’ return to the group, but might not risk him just yet.

“Personally it may be a good thing but he’s continuing his process and still lacks more training. But he’s doing well,” he said prematch on Friday.

Bournemouth faces Luton Town on March 13 before a trip to Wolves on March 16 in league play. The Cherries will then have a short pause due to the March international break.

Adams does remain an option for USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, should he earn a spot for upcoming CONCACAF Nations League involvement.

  1. Adams has been injured so often that the USMNT has hardly used him the last year or so. Seems to me that we can do without him for a bit more. Why take a chance when it is hardly a dire necessity?

  2. I really, really hope we don’t call him. Last time he was supposedly “recovered” he played like 20 minutes before injuring himself again…which means he wasn’t recovered. Coming back from injury is always such a dangerous time and especially when you’re talking about a ferocious competitor like Adams they always, always push it to get back on the field ASAP.

We need him for Copa America. We do not need him blowing his hammy out again so he can get a late run-out against Jamaica. We know exactly what the guy can (and cannot) do and were I Gregg he would have absolutely nothing to prove to me beyond: can he successfully rehab and regain his prior form?

    • Q, he may need him if he can go 20 minutes. McKennie, Reyna, and Maloney all appear to be injured and aren’t making the bench for club. Maybe McKennie will be back today but I doubt it. Team is down to Musah and Johnny as options at the 6. I wouldn’t say LDLT is really an option at the 6. Tessman didn’t show particularly well when he got first team minutes there IMO so not sure what other options there are.

      • If Cardosa gets a start, it would be his chance to shine (or fail) for the USMNT. He has done well at Baetis, but can that translate to USMNT teammates and international soccer? Jamaica is pretty athletic, can he keep up? Maybe we’ll see if he can show better than he has done in the past for the US.

      • And Weston with his 2nd assist of the match. Played 88 mins and was Player of the Match from Fotmob. Seems like he’s ok.

      • If thats all true then it’s about time Gregg comes up with an adequate solution NOT involving Tyler. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Besides, Tyler isn’t Tyler yet.. He hasn’t played in a year so if Gregg throws him into your hypothetical situation, we’re going to get some half ass version of Tyler.

If Gregg can’t win the NL without Tyler, who has been absent for at least a year, then this team is even lousier than I thought.

    • Dik, I just remember Busio getting pushed around a lot in qualifying. That was a long time ago and I think he did play stronger in the last gold cup if I remember correctly. I personally don’t have confidence in him as a 6 but it is Gregg’s opinion that counts. I haven’t watched any Seria 2 so I have no idea how strong the league is but I just don’t remember Busio or Tessman looking good when given the chance for the Nats whereas I thought Maloney did.

      • Tele and Dikranovich: I don’t get Fox Soccer Plus or whatever Venezia is on but in an interview with ASN, Busio said he’s played as a box to box with Tessman as the six.
