Christian Pulisic nominated for Serie A Midfielder of the Season award

Christian Pulisic’s impactful first season in Serie A has earned him a major nomination.

Pulisic has been nominated for the Serie A Midfielder of the Season award for the 2023-24 campaign. The U.S. men’s national team attacker is joined by Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners and Inter Milan’s Hakan Çalhanoğlu for the award.

The 25-year-old Pulisic made the permanent move to AC Milan last summer from Chelsea and enjoyed a smooth transition. Pulisic scored 15 goals and added nine assists across 49 combined appearances for the Rossoneri.

His 12 league goals are second-most in the AC Milan squad behind Olivier Giroud while his seven assists are the third-most behind Rafael Leao and Giroud. The 2023-24 campaign marked the most productive season of Pulisic’s club career to date.

AC Milan has already sealed a return to the UEFA Champions League next season after finishing second in the Serie A table. The Rossoneri closes out their competitive schedule against Salernitana on Saturday.

Pulisic is expected to have a busy summer after being called into USMNT duty for upcoming June friendlies vs. Colombia and Brazil. Gregg Berhalter’s squad will also host the Copa America tournament on home soil, beginning June 21.

  1. In the modern game, Wingers are midfielders especially RWs. There’s 3 formations that have wingers 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, and the 3-4-3. After the West Germans dominated with the 4-2-3-1 in the 1970s, in the 80s players who played on the “outside” forward line started to be called wingers. These players drop into the midfield more than lead the forward line to give their team the numerical advantage in the midfield. The Germans created a hybrid position with this formation because the 4-4-2 was the dominant formation in the World during the 50s & 60s. Before the press, man 2 man formation, players were only listed as forwards, midfielders, center backs, and fullbacks. AC Milan rotated between the 4-3-3 & 4-2-3-1. Traditionally, RWs spend more time than LWs in the midfield because most players are right footed, so the ball spends more time in players right foot. LWs (Vini Jr, Diaz, Gnabry, Depay, Leao, Perisic etc.) usually are shooters and RWs are usually former attacking midfielders (Riyad Mahrez, Ascencio, Ziyech, Zendejas). The best RWs in the world are left foot dominant (Kulusevski, Salah, Olise, Antony, Yamil, Di Maria, retired Arjen Robben) or use both feet extremely well like CP, Leroy Sane, & Valverde before Jude Bellingham (Anceletti changed form a 4-3-3 to a 4-3- Bellingham, underneath Vini Jr & Rodrigo). Wingbacks are midfielders also FYI.

  2. While he’s regularly deployed on the wings, and I think of CP as a wide forward, he gets most of his productivity from either cutting in from wide on the dribble 1v1 or MORE being a late runner through the middle. Nominal attacking mid skills, who is just listed on a team sheet as a winger
