Swanson, Smith, Yohannes headline USWNT’s 23-player roster for June friendlies

The first U.S. women’s national team roster of the Emma Hayes-era has officially been revealed.

Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Lily Yohannes headlined Hayes’ 23-player roster for June’s pair of home friendlies vs. South Korea. The Americans will host South Korea in Commerce City, Colorado on June 1 before concluding their two-match window in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 4.

Sam Staab, Hal Hershfelt, and Yohannes are three players seeking their first USWNT caps.

Catarina Macario and Emily Fox are in the squad after concluding their recent WSL seasons in England. Macario was part of Hayes’ Chelsea squad that won the league title for the fifth-consecutive season.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started,” said Hayes. “The preparations have been well underway and I can’t wait to get into camp. We know it’s a short turnaround and we have a lot of work to do, but I’m fully focused on making sure that the performances are at the levels that are required to compete. I want to build on the work that (former interim head coach and now assistant coach) Twila (Kilgore) has been implementing over the last six months.

“I expect complete commitment from everyone to absorb very quickly the things that I value as the most important so that we can compete this summer,” she added. “I know they are a highly coachable group and I’m looking forward to challenging them. It’s time to go to work. I can’t wait to meet the fans and it’s really time to get behind the team as we get closer to putting a roster together for the Olympics.”

A total of 19 of the 23 players called into camp were part of the SheBelieves Cup-winning squad last April. Veteran midfielder Rose Lavelle will become the 43rd member of the USWNT program to reach 100 international caps, if she features in both friendlies.

The USWNT has won five of the seven all-time matchups with South Korea, last winning 6-0 in 2021.

Here is the USWNT 23-player roster:

  1. Toughest 23 to make in the world! Interesting call ups and assuming Hayes need to kick the tires in person.
Sonnett as a CB or a RB? She is not up to international level of play at CB, RB, or the 6 or 8.
Tough midfield to crack and looking forward to seeing Yohannes play. Is Hayes playing an angle to get her to commit to the USWNT? I have seen the Spirit play and Hershfelt did not make an impression but must be doing something right. Both Yohannes and Herschfelt took Moultrie’s spot? Moultries last two goals were pure class technical finishes on first touch heat seeking top corner unsalable shots.
Excited to see the ladies play under Hayes and see how she rates players. Especially after being on the continent and seeing NWSL matches in person. Lots of talented women putting in the time and competing.

    • the depth at most positions for the USWNT is crazy good right now, a lot of people that could/should be here on merit aren’t because that’s just how good the pool is, and the hope is that Emma molds the team in a way that takes advantage of the individual players strength, as a collective!
