Tim Weah suspended two matches for red card vs. Panama

Should the U.S men’s national team advance to the Copa America knockout round, they will not have the services of Tim Weah.

Weah’s suspension has been extended to two matches following his red card offense in last Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Panama. The Juventus winger was sent off in the 19th minute after punching Roderick Miller in the head after the two were jostling for position in the middle of the field.

CONEMBOL revealed that Weah has also been fined $3,000 for his actions. The money will be deducted from the U.S. Soccer Federation’s payment from CONMEBOL for television, participation and/or prize money.

It marked the first ejection for Weah on the international level.

“Timmy gives us a verticality and assists,” USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said about Weah on Sunday. “He is dangerous in front of goal and defensively does a really good job so he is difficult to replace.

“But for us we have a game plan that we want to execute and will put players on the field we know can do that. Part of it is going to be that they need to pass and mover to continue to open up space that will be available and it will be really important we do that.”

Folarin Balogun’s 23rd minute opening goal boosted the Americans in front 1-0 but Panama rallied back to capture three points. Cesar Blackman equalized in the first half before Jose Fajardo delivered the winning goal off the bench late in the second half.

It marked the second-straight loss for the USMNT against Panama and their third in the past four years across multiple competitions.

Berhalter’s squad faces Uruguay on Monday in Kansas City, Missouri in their final group stage match. Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa is also suspended for the match, CONMEBOL announced Sunday.

Following the 2-1 loss to Panama, both the USMNT and the Panamanians are level on three points apiece heading into Monday night’s action.
