Americans Abroad Midweek Preview: Morris, Horvath, and more

Aidan Morris enjoyed a winning start to his Middlesbrough career and now the American will prepare for his first involvement in the EFL Cup.

Michael Carrick’s men welcome Leeds United to the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday in one of the mouthwatering ties of the first round. Morris made the move to Middlesbrough from the Columbus Crew this summer and has jumped right into the first team mix in midfield. The two-time MLS Cup winner showed positive moments in Saturday’s 1-0 home triumph vs. Swansea City, but also had a few worrying spells here and there.

Keeping the ever-lively Leeds United off the scoreboard will be tough for Middlesbrough, but playing at home might give them a slight advantage over their fellow EFL Championship counterparts.

Elsewhere in England, Haji Wright and Coventry City visit Bristol City. Auston Trusty and Sheffield United host Wrexham. Ethan Horvath and Cardiff City face off with Bristol Rovers.

In Spain, Johnny Cardoso and Real Betis begin their La Liga season vs. Girona.

In Europe, Rokas Pukstas and Matthew Olosunde resume qualifying campaigns with their respective teams.

  1. “Cole Campbell ist ein Bundesligaspieler. Bei uns wäre er in der ersten Mannschaft schon Stammspieler. Er ist brutal gut”,

    • I put the link to the whole match on the weekend rewind (with the CCV photo) if you’re interested. BvB have added him to the professional squad on their website so maybe a debut is coming sooner than later. Adeyemi and Malen are firmly in place as starters and Bynoe-Gittens is the next one up. Adeyemi has had interest from Juve, Chelsea, and Man United but seems intent to stay. Campbell is cap tied because he filed a one time switch so I don’t think the USMNT will call him in right away unless he’s getting regular Bundesliga minutes. I’d expect Booth, PAaronson, and Paredes to get looks before Cole. Of course all of this is up in the air until the new coach is hired, they’ll have their own thoughts on the types of players they want.

      • the quote, translated from german, is that in the opinion of schalke’s long-tenuted (and i mean since the mid90s) U19 coach, he is already a bundesliga level player, brutally good, who would start for schalke first team (in B.2). he sees what i see. at a point of watching someone this good, who others think is this good, sit and wait, your need for what i see as “lagging indicators” — that we literally wait until he gets to dortmund A stamps him approved — is absurd.

we didn’t wait for it on green, donovan, reyna, or pulisic. this kid is that good. this is a fast freaking winger with great touch and the ability to finish. he is the best thing i have seen since reyna, who, i also watched his U19 stuff and saw it.

same response for saying he needs to sit his turn behind paxten or booth. i mean, seriously.

the three kids they need to be pushing on wing are this kid, paredes, and yow. and i think cole is the best of the bunch. one of the oly team’s problems was the lack of a central focal point, and if i remember, that was paxten’s job.

      • to me the future of the NT looks something like cole/paredes/yow/weah/dest/jedi wingers, reyna/pulisic CAM, pulisic/balogun/pepi/ferreira 9, and then sort out a functioning back 6, starting with adams if he’s healthy, maybe pushing weah back. i like our winger potential but we cannot play the silly berhalter waiting game where we pick fights with the biggest prospects because they are on the toughest teams and latest to the first team party as pros. it gets the scouting precisely backwards. you don’t pick the guys off the weakest teams first because they couldn’t get signed anyplace else and thus ironically get the carpool lane to starting.

      • IV: Paredes was a regular starter in Bundesliga last season. Pax and Taylor are first choice starters in Eredivisie. They’d all start for Schalke and be their best player. I think Cole would definitely start for Utrecht as well, but Dortmund doesn’t usually loan players. I think Campbell could play for the NT and not look out of place but his problem is the attacking position is fairly deep. Pulisic and Weah aren’t going anywhere. If you play CP as a 10 then you have to find Gio a spot. Paredes certainly seems in line. Both Aaronsons are there as well. Add in Booth, perhaps Koleosho. Mighten just gave an interview indicating he’s interested (but hasn’t had much pro success). Diego Luna wouldn’t be out of the question either. Formation choice from the new manager could play a factor too. He’s really good for a 19 yr old. I’m changing my mind actually now that I think about it, it would be the perfect time to try some new players since it sounds like Mikey will be in charge. No reason to play Weah or Pulisic, you might as well make it a January camp style roster.

      • We did actually wait for Reyna and Pulisic to make first team debuts before calling them up. Technically Green had 2 mins for Bayern, but Klinsmann rushed him so we could steal him from Germany. Campbell literally cannot play for anyone else, ever. It’s US or never play international soccer. Let’s also be honest about Donovan, he had to beat out Chris Henderson, Chris Klein, fellow youngster Bobby Convey, Sasha Victorine and he didn’t play in a non-friendly until he was regularly playing in MLS.

      • IV,

“we didn’t wait for it on …………, reyna, or pulisic.”

You’re making stuff up to fit your narrative again. You should stop spreading malarkey around. I don’t know about the others two but Pulisic and Gio both were given their first team BVB debuts before they were called up into the first team of the US of A. You can look it up on a computer.

“we cannot play the silly berhalter waiting game where we pick fights with the biggest prospects because”

You bitch, moan and whine about always fighting the last war and here you are fighting the last war.

Gregg Berhalter is no longer the manager of the USMNT.

In any event there is nothing wrong with waiting more than a game or two to demote Weah, Booth and every other American winger type player in favor of this kid.

BVB are looking at him to eventually become a full time starter. They need to see how he does after a longer run of games. One or two games vs. modest opposition and you’ve already gone into overhyped USMNT soccer savior mode based on one or two games.

He may well be that good and it may be that BVB will first team him shortly but in that instance, BVB have the data on him and on their own first team and its needs. Info that none of us have. And if that happens it could negatively affect Gio. They do, after all, play the same position, more or less. And Cole is younger and cheaper. It seems now like Gio might be staying after all but maybe they should just put Cole in the first team and send Gio to Wrexham.

My thing on this is the USMNT don’t even have a manager, and have other winger types, starting with Gio, that have yet to get anywhere near their potential, why do you want to push Cole to the head of the line? BVB is well known for developing really good and some great young players so if I’m Jason Kreis or Caleb Porter, I let Cole take advantage of all that.

  2. Koleosho is finally back from injury. I didn’t get it turned on until he was out, but his stats were not great. Barnsley smashed Luton on the road 4-1.
