Matt Turner left out of Nottingham Forest squad for Premier League opener

It looks like Matt Turner is third in the Nottingham Forest goalkeeping ranks heading into the 2024-25 English Premier League season.

Turner was left out of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad for Saturday’s league opener vs. AFC Bournemouth. Matz Sels, who was acquired by Forest last February, got the starting nod against the Cherries, a match that finished 1-1 at the City Ground.

Brazilian shot-stopper Carlos Miguel was acquired from Corinthians earlier this summer and is Sels’ back-up for the season opener.

Turner, 30, joined Nottingham Forest last summer in a permanent deal from Arsenal and proceeded to be in and out of the starting lineup. He made 21 combined appearances under both Steve Cooper and Santo, registering three clean sheets.

However, his last start came in a 1-0 FA Cup fifth round loss to Manchester United on February 28.

Turner has previously been linked with a potential move to the Bundesliga or La Liga this season. His Forest contract runs until June 2027, but it seems very unlikely that Turner stays throughout the entirety of it.

The USMNT’s No. 1 could be on the move in the final two weeks of the Summer Transfer Window.

  1. Maybe he is injured? If not him being told to walk the plank off the ship is not good. Our GK pool needs to be revived, Horvath has same playing with feet weakness like Turner, and Horvath was not even under pressure, smh.

    • I’ve mentioned this on a couple other threads, but I think Steffen’s our #1 again. Folks can argue about why he was in wretched form the last 3+ years but whatever happened he looks like he’s over it. He’s been on fire in the Leagues Cup and is a huge part of the reason Colorado has beaten four straight Liga MX teams – including Club America last night in LA, in front of a crowd that looked like it was 99% Mexican.

      Right now no one.

There is no official depth chart tacked up on a wall in Chicago or Atlanta. The USMNT #1 keeper will be named by Pochettino or whoever will be managing the team for the Marsch get together in September.
