Jesse Marsch didn’t sugarcoat his feelings after his Canada squad picked up their first road win over the U.S men’s national team since 1957.
Canada used goals from Jacob Shaffelburg and Jonathan David to claim a 2-1 victory in Kansas City, Kansas. The Canadians frustrated the Americans for most of the match and took advantage of two USMNT defensive errors to score their goals.
Marsch, who was at one time a candidate for the USMNT head coaching vacancy, chose Canada in May and proceeded to lead his squad to a final four finish at the Copa America. The former Leeds United and RB Leipzig manager admitted that he “wasn’t treated very well” by U.S. Soccer during the interviewing process, which helped make his decision to choose a move to Canada.
“I’m not bitter,” Marsch told reporters after Canada’s win Saturday. “Most people, if they ask me a question, I answer it. That’s how I operate in the media. I’d much rather coach Canada than the U.S. right now.
“You can see the mentality that’s been developed,” he added. “You can see the way this team plays. You can see how much they love playing for the national team and they’re willing to put their careers and lives and the way they play on the line to be the best they can be for each other and for the team. I wouldn’t change coaching this team right now for anything in the world.”
U.S. Soccer meanwhile has continued to chase Mauricio Pochettino as the program’s next head coach, a move that would be the largest in the history of the USMNT. Pochettino was released from his previous job at Chelsea last May despite signing a two-year guaranteed contract with the London-based club in Summer 2023.
Unpaid wages have reportedly kept Pochettino from signing with U.S. Soccer this summer, forcing Mikey Varas to serve as interim head coach for this window. Varas will likely be on the sidelines again Tuesday when the USMNT hosts New Zealand in their final match of the September break.
The USMNT have now lost three-consecutive matches dating for the first time since 2015, a streak that Varas and his players will hope to snap in Cincinnati this week..
Burning bridges isnt a great strategy. What goes around comes around.
Throwing it in the face of an employer that didn’t think you were good or qualified enough……only to go to a rival employer and excel in that very position by not only excelling more in a competition they were BOTH a part of BUT ALSO BEATING THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME right after taking over……lol, I LOVE IT!!!
If USSoccer wanted to shut up people like Jesse Marsch or the CanMNT or podcasters or sports announcers………they would elevate the programs and translate that success on the field. To add insult to injury, the person that wasn’t good enough for USSoccer, has the CanMNT looking like the more dominating side in CONCACAF.
Jesse Marsch has slapped USSoccer program in the face twice……with absolutely no reaction or retaliation…haha
Dude needs to STFU. Comments like that are really unprofessional.
I kinda like Jesse, but dude talks… a lot. Maybe too much for his own good. “I’m not bitter.” LoL Aw c’mon now Jesse, clearly you are and likely have pretty good reason, knowing US Soccer. But, as much as we all like the entertainment of someone speaking their mind, what does it serve? Definitely not his current employer. He ain’t going to be at Canada forever- it’s probably not great for his prospects for future employment- even outside the US. It all feels like lot’s of unnecessary distraction and drama and he’s not exactly reached the Mourinho level needed for people to want to deal with… all that.
The USMNT looks like a team without a manager or any kind of plan… If it’s Poch, then get the deal done. Otherwise, move on to the next option. Or, if we’re going to waste international windows dickering over someone, then call players that haven’t been capped. Or call U23s. Or just forget it and leave players with their clubs. What a waste.
What’s he supposed to say? “You know if Pochettino doesn’t show give me a call.” Jesse rooted against the US throughout NL hoping they’d fail so he could step in, but that didn’t happen so he had to look for other jobs. It’s very strange that he keeps talking about the US job so much. When has the other country’s manager ever went on American soccer media tour ahead of a friendly?
Lol, I like how Jesse has no filter and is blunt, you can def tell he is from the Midwest, haha.
As someone from the Midwest you can tell he left Wisconsin a long time ago. Upper Midwest, Wisconsin or Minnesota would normally talk around the issue and probably apologize to USSF for making them treat him poorly.
I lived in Upper Wisconsin Upper Pen Michigan people are hella rude! Had to leave because of peoples behavior up there!
Michigan totally get, Western Wisconsin in my experience are overly nice. Of course my experiences are probably a lot different because of my skin tone.
Sadly Johnnyrazor is probably right
