Daryl Dike suffers hamstring injury in West Brom training

An unfortunate setback has led to added time on the sidelines for Daryl Dike.

Dike, who was back in full training with EFL Championship side West Bromwich Albion, suffered a slight hamstring issue in training, manager Carlos Corberan confirmed Monday. A former MLS standout with Orlando City, Dike had been out of action since rupturing his Achilles last February.

Injuries have plagued Dike’s time at West Brom, reducing him to only 32 combined appearances since joining from the Lions in January 2022. He’s scored eight goals over that span, but missed ample time for both and country.

Whether or not we see Dike this year remains to be seen, but Corberan had already planned for a possible setback with the striker ramping up his training regimen in recent weeks.

“In training this week, Daryl Dike was feeling a small pain in his hamstring,” Corberan said Monday. “Let’s say it’s a small setback, but this is part of the process. We know that when he came back into training with the group, in this last step of his rehabilitation is when the muscle problems could appear. It’s not a surprise for us, but it’s also not a positive for him because he was in the last period after having a difficult time and now he has another difficult one.

“It’s a small setback that we need to manage well, but, in my opinion, it’s a normal part of this process,” he added. “When you try to make your body ready again after a long time, you are going to have some muscle difficulty. The medical staff and the coaching staff understand that this is part of the process.  It hasn’t affected my plans with Daryl or our upcoming games, but it’s important to manage this carefully because we don’t want something small to turn into something big.”

West Brom has done well in Dike’s absence, registering a 5-5-2 record in the Championship, which has them sitting fifth in the standings. The Baggies have 12 league matches remaining in 2024 before the second half of the season begins in January.

  1. Just because other big frame guys are injury free for the most part, like Lebron or Aaron Rogers or Romelu Lukaku does mean it is genetics. Are they trained the same way as Dike? Are they given or taking the same supplements and nutrition? Are their recovery schedules the same??? Are their off-season workouts the same or compatible? The answer is no.
Most of those guys have either good PERSONAL trainers / Dietitians / solid physical therapists with a good off-season programs .etc, or are part of a top team that has a very good Training core.
None of those guys know or are experiencing what Daryl Dike is going through at West Bromwich Albion (because they are not playing or training at West Bromwich) or have been personally trained by Tony Strudwick and kept injury free.

  2. Ok Dike this is just out of control. He must be doing a lot of things wrong to be this injury prone!!!! Muscle building, development and recovery is part of his damn job. It cannot be that hard……what is he NOT doing.

Deep stretching before AND after ANY vigorous activity (Both static and dynamic stretching).

Build strength and endurance by slowly increasing the intensity and duration of workouts (Injuries are common in athletes who try to ramp up sports too quickly).

Cross train and avoid continuous stress on the same muscles and joints.

ICE BATHS. Cold and Hot therapies (repetitive hot sauna and ice-cold plunge) are both effective for enhancing muscle recovery and reducing muscle damage.

Taking a recovery day WITH THE RIGHT NUTRITION. Proper time off from vigorous training to allow the body to recover and heal.

Take Muscle building and recovery supplements (THAT ARE NOT BANNED BY ATHLETIC ORGANIZATIONS) – Amino Acids and whey protein, creatine, HMB, Glutamine. University of Maryland Medical Center have historically been using glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, bromelain, vitamin C, zinc, white willow bark, turmeric, and horse chestnut in treating FREQUENT muscle tears in athletes.

Like so what actually gives???? what is he doing wrong? Who is his physical fitness coach??? Who is the team nutritionist??? He didn’t have these issues when playing in Orlando. This injury prone at only 24…….makes no sense. He’s not going above and beyond to take care of his body. Evidently the basic standard of what the team is doing is not enough.

    • Yes, I’m sure the training staff at West Brom is ignorant to these strategies. They’ve been taking it slow returning to full team training over a month ago. As the manager said, fully expected to have some muscle strain after an almost two year break without competition.

hmmm………I guess they’re not. I think Daryl Dike is just fragile and pulls muscles signing autographs or not doing a damn thing. Who knew…..

Oh and Tom Joyce’s skills that are desired by elite-level players around the world seeking to gain an edge over their rivals is all just BS……and when one of the most respected strength and conditioning coaches around talks about the extra and proper lengths top players have go through to improve and maintain their bodies at an elite level is all nonsense…… as all they have to do is rely on their teams training staff THAT SEEM TO KNOW IT ALL. Again who knew……….lol

      • Bizzy: what I’m saying is you have no idea what Dike is doing. Just because he has some minor pain in his hamstring you think you know more than Tony Strudwick, West Broms Director of Medical, who has a PhD in sports science and has worked at ManU, English NT, Welsh NT, and Arsenal. Yes, I’m sure in your 5 minutes of a google search you learned more than he has in his over 20 year professional career. That you found all that doing in internet search probably should tell you it isn’t that big of a secret. Thanks for telling us what we could have learned on the back of the multivitamin bottle at the GNC. Sometimes people get injured.

      • Johnny,
I see your google searching is improving. What you didn’t research is that almost all directors and heads of these medical departments have Ph.ds but not all are created equal. You think just because they have the qualification on paper means Daryl Dike is in good hands…..hahaha. Why do you think elite athletes like the Ronaldo’s, the Messi’s, the Nemar’s, Mbappe’s etc) have their own Nutritionists, personal trainers, physical therapists etc.
All you see is the final product but like any job (like you should know) has a range of expertise and experience from satisfactory to the very best. Seems like laying down experience about physical fitness and nutritional supplements triggered you, and it shouldn’t. All you have to do is make that trip to the gym, have a plan to build muscle and recover from Muscle tension and I promise you will know most of what I’m talking about, and………hahahaha. For some Johnnyrazor, its just a way of life.

  3. Bro just retire, I dont mean to be negative. This Is not health people on Sofifa were saying his frame is what’s getting him injured. This is 2024 version of John O’Brian. Just go into coaching.

    • Striker91,

JOB physically could not continue. JOB had a pretty serious structural issue with his body.

Continuing his athletic career was impossible.

That is not true for Daryl, at least not yet or so far as we know.

    • Striker, are those medical professionals or kinesiologists? I’m not saying they’re wrong but a site for “scouting” video game characters might not be the most founded in science. Lukaku a fairly big guy stayed healthy into his upper 20s. Let’s not forget Dike is 6’2 215 lbs, and as a forward he’s not putting in tons of miles. If that size prohibits you from running and jumping the NFL and NBA would have no athletes left. Soccer teams are not super accurate with their weights but Dike is basically the size of Aaron Rodgers. Maybe not the best comparison for healthy Achilles I suppose. Jason Kelce played at 6’3 282, his brother is 6’5 250. LeBron runs up and down the court at 250. It doesn’t appear Dike’s frame is the issue more likely genetics. His brother Bright also did both Achilles.

      • Striker: he’s big for a soccer player, but nothing compared to an American football player or even most NBA players. If it’s muscle mass is too much for the Achilles how are any linebackers or running backs still walking? Again be careful taking health advice from a video game forum.
