Brandon Vazquez joins Austin FC in permanent deal

Brandon Vazquez is on his way back to MLS.

Austin FC acquired the veteran forward in a permanent deal from Liga MX club Monterrey, both sides announced Monday. Vazquez signed a Designated Player contract through 2028 which includes an option for 2029.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Austin FC, and I want to give special thanks to Anthony Precourt, Rodolfo Borrell and Nico Estévez for their efforts and belief in me,” said Vazquez. “Austin FC is an organization with terrific fan support, with big plans for the future. I hope to make an immediate impact this season and help contribute to the success of the club for years to come.”

A former MLS Best XI and All-Star selection with FC Cincinnati, Vazquez scored 26 goals and added 12 assists in 62 regular season appearances for the Eastern Conference club. He helped the club win the 2023 Supporters’ Shield.

He moved to Monterrey in 2024 and proceeded to score 14 goals in his one calendar year there. On the international level, Vazquez has scored four goals in 11 USMNT caps. He mainly featured during the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

“Brandon has already proven to be a goalscorer in both MLS & Liga MX,” said Austin FC Sporting Director Rodolfo Borrell. “His well-known daily dedication to get prepared for games, his passion for the game, and his determination when he competes were key factors when deciding on bringing him to Austin FC.”

  1. He knows where he stands in USMNT and this is probably the peak. Take the best money offer you can get at his age. This also includes all games in Texas as state tax free.

    • Probably didn’t have any significant offers. He’s had one big season in MLS and that was a couple years ago. He’s 26 which isn’t old, but he’s probably not going to improve. Certainly not any Euro clubs that would pay anywhere near what he can get in MLS or Liga Mx would pay for Vazquez. He’s marketable here, but not so much in Europe.

      • Crazy thing, big framed guys like him usually play their best soccer between 29-33 … some week into their mid-thirties Something about “growing” into their bodies and/or maybe learning how to use their physicality along with ball skills makes them deadly efficient at that time in their career paths. There are numerous examples of guys going in consecutive 15 – 20 goal seasons for 4-5 years. I hope this is the path for Brandon. I would love to see him in the 5 Stripes again.

      • T3S: a couple things, what’s concerning is his production has declined slightly since 2022. 2023 wasn’t bad when you add in Leagues Cup and Open Cup. Even his Liga Mx isn’t bad 10g 1a in 39 matches. However, it’s down from 20 g in 33 appearances in 2022. A top 5 league team isn’t going to pay to bring in a 26 yr old from Liga Mx/MLS what Austin paid. If you figure he will get better in his future years you are looking at a 15-20g scorer in MLS/Liga Mx that translates to what 7-10 g in Europe if he’s starting? Probably not going to draw interesting so that puts you in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark range that’s going to pay their #2 strike $200-300 thousand. He can make 10x that in MLS minimum. MLS is his best move and probably keeps him more in a chance to score and get NT interest.

I really thought ATLU would work for him. At the end of the day Martinez just wouldn’t come out enough for him to get enough minutes.
