European interest has continued to grow in U.S. men’s national team striker Ricardo Pepi but Eredivisie leaders PSV have locked him down for the long-term.
Pepi signed a new contract with PSV until 2030, the club announced Sunday. The news comes only two days after Pepi was diagnosed with a serious knee injury, one that will keep him sidelined for one-to-three months.
“It’s a difficult week for me, but I’m very happy at the moment and that’s because of this deal”, said Pepi.
“Thanks to the huge amount of love and opportunities that PSV gives me and the special club that PSV is, I had no doubt about extending my contract. We have already experienced many unforgettable moments together and hopefully many more special milestones will follow.”
Despite recent interest from English Premier League side West Ham United, PSV rewarded Pepi by making him the longest-tenured player in the current roster.
Pepi, 22, has enjoyed an impactful season for the Eredivisie leaders, scoring 17 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions. Despite featuring mainly off the bench this season, Pepi has made his impact known in multiple competitions.
PSV advanced to the UCL Playoffs last Wednesday and will face Serie A side Juventus in February’s playoff round.
Pepi’s injury will likely sideline him for the USMNT’s CONCACAF Nations League window this March. The American was slated to be among Mauricio Pochettino’s top striking options for the semifinal tie vs. Panama, but may have to wait until the Gold Cup to represent his country.
He was already making 2.5 million to be their backup. Moving Lozano’s contract off their books should open up some money. Wonder if he’ll be pushing Dest’s team high 4.1 million.
