Venezia’s hopes of avoiding relegation from Serie A received a major boost on Saturday with Gianluca Busio playing a key role in a crucial home win.
Busio played 85 minutes as Venezia defeated Monza 1-0 in an important bottom-three showdown. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder retained his starting spot in Eusebio Di Francesco’s squad, delivering a strong shift.
Busio drew a match-high four fouls while also winning eight duels and making two tackles. The 22-year-old watched as Daniel Fila came off the bench to score the winning goal, moving Venezia two points clear of safety with six matches to play.
Venezia next travels to Empoli in Serie A play before hosting AC Milan to close April’s schedule.
In England, Chris Richards scored once but Crystal Palace lost at Manchester City. Caleb Wiley continued his positive run for Watford.
In Germany, Joe Scally and Borussia Moenchengladbach lost at home in Bundesliga play. John Tolkin logged 90 minutes for Holstein Kiel.
