USWNT downs Canada to close successful summer window

The U.S. women’s national team closed out its summer window with a home win against its closest rivals.

Emma Hayes’ squad downed CONCACAF rivals Canada 3-0 in the Continental Clasico in Washington, D.C. The result capped off a perfect 3-0-0 June-July window for the USWNT after they previously defeated the Republic of Ireland twice in late-June.

Sam Coffey continued a productive summer window by opening the scoring with her third goal in as many matches. Coffey finished off Avery Patterson’s pass into the bottom-left corner, giving the Americans a 1-0 advantage after 17 minutes.

Claire Hutton extended the USWNT’s lead to 2-0 before halftime after delivering her first international goal. Rose Lavelle’s service was finished off by Hutton, continuing a busy night for the hosts.

Yazmeen Ryan scored her second goal in as many matches to cap the USWNT’s result at 3-0 just before second-half stoppage time. Ryan cut onto her left foot before stroking a shot into the bottom-right corner.

Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey registered a three-save clean sheet, which marked the USWNT’s fifth-straight shutout.

The USWNT should be back in action this fall as they continue preparations for 2027 FIFA World Cup qualifying.

  2. Emma Hayes from a roster selection perspective went deeper than Poch has done in this Gold Cup. There were so many newcomers being tested it was hard to keep track. And what is noteworthy, more than a few made a good impression. The real test comes when they bump heads against the Euro heavyweights in future friendlies.

  3. After an underwhelming spring losing to Japan and Brazil, Emma has righted the ship with a 5-0 (18-0 aggregate) summer using two almost completely different rosters. Canada is clearly a team in transition after the Olympic scandal last year and retirement of Sinclair in 2023, but that was a pretty solid roster our B/C team handled Trois es zero.
