Ethan Horvath is heading back in the EFL Championship.
Horvath has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan until January 2026, the club announced Friday. The 30-year-old goalkeeper could make his club debut on Saturday when Sheffield Wednesdays faces Wrexham in league play.
Pierce Charles’ recent injury forced Sheffield Wednesday to seek help at the goalkeeping position. 19-year-old Logan Stretch was the only other first team goalkeeper signed at the time.
Horvath suffered relegation to League One last May with Cardiff City and remainder under contract there despite not dressing for the club’s opening five matches of the new season.
He made 36 appearances for the Bluebirds over the past two seasons and prior to that was at Nottingham Forest. Horvath also made 51 appearances on loan at Luton Town during the 2022-23 season, helping the Hatters earn promotion to the English Premier League.
Prior to his move to England, the Colorado native spent two seasons with Norwegian side Molde and five campaigns with Belgian giants Club Brugge.
He’s earned 10 caps for the U.S. men’s national team to date.
Sheffield Wednesday has lost its opening two Championship matches this season but did advance into the second round of the EFL Cup.
changed my mind. wednesday has not been paying players, staff, or the UK’s equivalent of the IRS. friendlies were called off and players were told they would have to pay for their own road hotel rooms. some players used the payroll issues as a reason to leave. which is how a loan player like horvath has an “opportunity.”
i mean Sheffield Notpayday
this is an interesting but short opportunity, because there is no one else to even beat out now. for someone whose agent has repeatedly set him up in benchwarmer roles this is finally a starter role. but it’s short lived as it’s a half season loan, and heck, they could still shop now for another keeper.
i’d have been more comfortable season loan with a buy option.
Such an interesting European career. He’s like Gooch where he’s just trucking along being a consistent professional making those paychecks. Now he will get called into the national team here and there because he’s been earning club minutes, but never really sticks at club or the national level. Hey, but at least he’s been more consistent at game time compared to other goalies, even if at the lower levels.
