Tanner Tessmann played the hero for Lyon in its recent Ligue 1 victory and now the American midfielder will aim to do the same in UEFA Europa League play on Thursday.
Lyon kicks off its league phase schedule with a trip to Dutch Eredivisie club FC Utrecht. Tessmann delivered his first goal of the season and his second overall in Lyon colors as the French side defeated Angers 1-0 on Friday. The former FC Dallas academy product has remained a constant starter in Paulo Fonseca’s squad this summer, bringing a strong work rate and endless range to the midfield.
With a tough test coming against a good Utrecht side, Lyon can afford minimal mistakes on the road in Holland.
Elsewhere in Europe, Erik Palmer-Brown also begins his Europa League schedule.
In Spain, Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid host Rayo Vallecano in La Liga action.
In England, Antonee Robinson and Lynden Gooch are among the American contingent involved in EFL Cup play.
Elsewhere, Griffin Yow and Bryan Reynolds have a midweek trip to Club Brugge. Benji Michel and HJK face off with FC Inter Turku in Finnish league action. Dante Polvara and Aberdeen travel to Dundee United in Scottish Premiership action. Alex Zendejas and Cade Cowell continue Liga MX play.

Weah with the start at RWB in Marseille’s 1 – 0 win vs PSG today. He put in a solid 78 minute shift. He was mostly matched up against Nuno Mendes and he acquitted himself very well. Some additional notes…
Defensive Third –
He did well defensively, including positionally and while defending on the ball.
Attacking Third –
It would have been great to see him get forward more, but it was clear that his tactical directive was to be conservative in going forward. In the attacking third, his development has stalled, especially with regards to dribbling at and passed defenders when he has the 1v1 on the wing.
Middle Third of the field –
He had two instances where he clearly got mentally complacent, and as a result, he lost his opponent ( Mendes ) and Marseille were almost punished for it. Additionally, in this part of the field he got complacent in his positioning, especially when Marseille was out of possession and the ball was on the other side of the field.
Marseille were in a 3-4-3, but it often looked like a 5-2-2-1. Respective to the USMNT, it will be interesting to see if Weah will be Poch’s first choice RWB when Poch chooses to play 5-2-2-1.
